Idevnews | CA World: In 2017, APIs Will Be Doorways to DevOps, Digital Transformation by Vance McCarthy

At last month’s CA World user conference, CA Technologies showcased its vision for how an end-to-end approach to APIs has the power to transform IT and business.

CA execs said APIs will be the ‘nervous system’ for digital transformation, forming the backbone and infrastructure for new-gen digital business. Further, APIs will also provide a gateway to DevOps,” driving new agile and quick-to-launch apps.

To empower APIs to achieve these outcomes, CA is focusing its API efforts on three main outcomes, CA’s senior vice president of API Management Rahim Bhatia told IDN.

    1. To build “an end-to-end symbiotic relationship between API publishers and API consumers.”
    2. To create a flexible and extensible API platform to help IT deliver APIs, apps and services that will help companies meet new opportunities, competition and challenges, and
    3. To ensure API-crafted infrastructure and apps deliver high levels of performance, reliability and customer satisfaction.

To meet these goal, CA is coupling its historic focus on QA, testing, management and security with a new set of API-first technologies, Bhatia told IDN. “Taken together the beauty of CA’s approach to APIs is we can help enterprise customer at every point across the lifecycle to get the most from their APIs,” Bhatia said.

Specifically, CA’s end-to-end API portfolio offers these abilities to IT and business stakeholders:

Even beyond this full slate of API lifecycle offerings, CA is going a step further – allowing each offering itself to become an API-enabled component, like a Lego building block.   "CA is exploring using APIs to connect [these] products together," Bhatia said, evaluating ways to expose / create APIs for each product. This would provide customers an extra level of flexibility where they can easily assemble – or even switch out – components in an API-powered platform for faster and more inventive digital transformation.

APIs Drive Digital Transformation at Beachbody

CA’s vision of assembling an adaptable digital enterprise with API build blocks is proving itself at Beachbody, the $1 billion fitness and weight loss firm famous for workout videos and nutritional supplements.

“APIs, when done correctly, are the only way to avoid large re-platforming projects,” said Michael Lee, Beachbody’s vice president for technology told IDN.

“Beachbody is just completing a big three-year digital transformation project to modernize and bring together a wide range of infrastructure and apps,” Lee said. After almost a year of homework, prep and RFPs, Beachbody elected to work with CA on an API-centered approach, coupled with the cloud.

“We came up with next gen architecture to lift-shift out of our [on-premises] data centers into a cloud-first strategy. We also decided to go with an API-driven, domain segmented microservices architecture – all to prepare us for change and agility,” Lee stated.

    Enterprise Security

Secure Apps, Data and End Users for the Digital Enterprise
    January 26, 2017
    An Online Conference

Beachbody’s API + Cloud transformation project was "immense and wide-spread,” Lee said, “embracing virtually every piece of the company’s business critical componentry -- e-commerce engines, CMS systems, customer service portals, registration systems, shopping cart flows and even web publishing workflows.”

Before Beachbody’s digital transformation projects, very few of these systems talked to each other, having been built at different times to support different products. To improve business efficiency, Lee said his team needed a more seamless and agile approach.

As it turned out, Lee found APIs would prove to be a great way to achieve ‘loose-coupling’ --  one that could support data, services and component-level integration. In terms of loose-coupling, Lee’s team discovered an API-founded approach would solve quite a few of the limitations and complications of SOA (services oriented architecture).

“With SOA, we created a horizontal services team and they became the central source of knowledge for our middleware pieces. The result was an app delivery team would have to depend on that horizontal service to help them,” Lee said. “The worst part of this dependency across teams often meant the app delivery team wouldn’t always understand what that service does,” he added.

It was easy to see how APIs provide new power and simplicity to ‘loose-coupling’ and could solve the confusion and boost efficiency, Lee explained.

“With APIs, delivery teams are going to own all of their APIs. They will own documentation, automated testing, service catalogue, governance pieces. This will improve access and prevent the fossilization and ossification of their APIs,” he told IDN. So, unlike SOA, an API platform provides a way to define, create and (when necessary) swap out full-featured interchangeable components. APIs also give more precise control to stakeholders, he added.

In choosing CA, Lee said, “CA really got it. They understood challenges to move from SOA SOAP to REST. They also were willing to work with us to bring our vision for APIs and Cloud together.” Beachbody chose Amazon Web Services, and found CA’s combination of technology and support a key to their choice of vendor. Lee listed 3 main pluses from CA:

    1. Immediate info security approval. “CA had all the check boxes ticked,” Lee said.

    2. Robust end-to-end API ecosystem at the enterprise level. “That didn’t exist from others. We got all we needed to build an evergreen API ecosystem,” Lee said. Of particular note, Lee listed several CA API offerings that worked together -- Live API Creator, Mobile API Gateway, Developer Portal and API Management.

    3. Consulting and support – “We needed some custom development to move to the cloud. We’re a billion-dollar company, but nobody else would do that for us, not even Amazon.”

Beachbody designed and implemented their solution in collaboration with CA and Amazon Web Services.

The API + Cloud approach is also set to pay dividends for Beachbody’s international expansion plans. “As we look to expand internationally, we don’t want to re-invent the wheel every time. We want a loosely coupled system that can move to other countries,” Lee said. “Thanks to APIs, Beach Body can easily adjust their platform modules and capabilities to specifically conform to each international geo requirement for security, data privacy and content publishing concerns,” he continued.

Longer term, Lee also sees great value in CA’s vision for API-enabled plug-and-play components. “There may come a day where Beachbody may want to change out our e-commerce engine out, With the right set of RESTful constraints or APIs in place, I’ll be able to support that – without having to go down for long periods or even retrain my whole IT team.”

Lee also says APIs create one other big benefit – trust among teams, especially those that don’t work together on a day-to-day basis. “To be agile, you don’t need just great tools, you need to build trust across your teams. As we invest in APIs, CA is helping is to be sure they are trustworthy and supported,” he added. Trustworthy APIs need good technology, along with good planning and a design-first mentality, he said.

Changing Business Realities Fuel Need for New Approaches to Software

Beachbody illustrates a core API CA World – that today’s businesses need to be ‘built to change.”

In his CA World keynote, CA’s CEO Mike Gregoire said in times past, businesses thought they needed a strong business model that would be ‘built to last.’ But today, even today’s most long-lived and reliable business models are under pressure to adapt and change, so businesses now need to be ‘built to change.’

Companies that don’t change fast enough not only face pressure, some can even crash and burn -- victims of disintermediation, Gregoire said. So, rather than put blind faith in a status business model, companies need an agile, adaptable, flexible software at the center of all their activity. “The idea of sustainable competitive advantage has given way to the more contemporary concept of ‘business agility,’ meaning the ability to automatically sense, react and adapt quickly to shifting market dynamics,” he said.

“APIs will help software become a ‘core component of a business’ DNA,” Gregoire added. With APIs, software will be more agile and adaptive, even helping update or revise those business models cracking under pressure. APIs aren’t just technology; they help companies achieve key business goals, he said, including:

    • adjust to change
    • capture new opportunities;
    • fight off new competitors;
    • cut costs and reduce errors; and
    • always be able to keep customers first.

APIs To Power “Nervous System for Digital Transformation” & “Gateway to DevOps”

CA’s CTO Berkes described his vision for using API Management as a new “nervous system” for the digital enterprise. “API Management will communicate data and services for and between apps. It will also orchestrate processes. Modern day help desks, supply chain, edit and ecommerce are being re-platformed with API-driven technologies,” CA CTO Berkes said.

In his ebook, ‘Digitally Remastered: Building Software into your Business DNA,’ Berkes wrote in part:

Because APIs are such a powerful tool for sharing data and services, they are driving a complete reengineering of the software supply chain. By programmatically providing access to a business’s information and services, APIs dramatically accelerate application development speed.

Millions of servers connected to the Internet make it possible to quickly turn an iea into a valuable API-based service available to application developers.

CA’s Bressler shared how APIs be a “gateway to DevOps,” and accelerate the time it takes to get from idea-to-app.

“The way we create software today is the way a craftsman creates furniture 100 years ago. We get a block of wood and create a chair. When we need another chair, we have to go get another block of wood,” Bressler said. “We need to be able to systematize the craftsmanship of software. The best way to do that is through better automation and more seamless DevOps,” he said.

“With APIs, DevOps can more easily embrace many app requirements, including: security, quality, performance, user experience, governance, compliance and even analytics,” Bressler added.

To prove the point, CA is exposing a set of useful health care-specific services as APIs adding in needed security features via the CA API Gateway. “A partner has already built a health care mobile app against these APIs, and the security is enforced in the gateway,” Bressler said.

CA is also exploring a similar API-driven platform for finance, looking at ways APIs could help apps automatically know when they should step up risk authentication based on suspicious user activity. “Think about an app where as soon as you ask to transfer money over a certain amount, there is an API in the app that triggers a question,” Bressler said. “The API is saying in effect, ‘We need to know more about who you are?’ And thanks to API, the company can choose what type of authentication they want to use -- 2-factor, facial recognition or whatever,” he added.

CA is looking at a range of these API platforms for certain vertical markets, he said.

In another example of DevOps, CA is looking at ways to speed up how to show off ideas for new apps. “We’re approaching the place where instead of showing a PowerPoint, you want to show an app,” Bressler stated. “You want everyone to experiment -- developers, but also IT, business and even end users. That’s where APIs are a special gateway to DevOps.”

Beyond APIs, CA announced a series of other solutions in their Agile, DevOps, Security portfolios. Among them:

    • A new IDaaS (identity-as-a-service) solution to address identity and access management (IAM) needs for both on-premises and cloud-based applications.
    • Added DevOps capabilities across several product families, with intelligent analytics and integrations for cloud services and virtual networks
    • Enhancements to CA Agile Central, SaaS solution purpose-built to scale agile practices

The firm employs 600 employees across offices in Vienna, Paris, Japan and Bellevue in Washington State, serving customers in sectors including energy, financial services, healthcare, manufacturing, retail and telecommunications.

The transaction has been unanimously approved by each firm's board of directors and is expected to close during CA Technologies' fourth financial quarter, ending 31 March 2017.

    Cindy Baker - December 2, 2016

Improving customer experience is a top priority for almost 70 per cent of organizations, but many find it challenging to achieve a five-star rating.

“Customer experience is everything because the real disrupters are the users,” said Bryan Whitmarsh, senior principal product manager with CA Technologies at a recent IT World Canada webinar. “They’re going to pick where they purchase based on their experience.”

However, an ITWC survey showed that organizations are having difficulties providing a seamless customer experience, measuring end-to-end performance and dealing with technical complexity.

To provide a five-star experience, it’s critical to be able to address these issues, said Whitmarsh. The webinar, which was sponsored by CA Technologies, provided advice on how to deliver a better customer experience in an omnichannel world.

    What omnichannel really means

The channels for delivering applications are proliferating, adding to the problem of complexity, said Whitmarsh. As an example, he noted that there are expected to be 500 million wearables in use by 2020.

The term “omnichannel” is not only about being able to support all of these channels, but the ability to retain the context across them, said Whitmarsh. “There’s nothing more frustrating than starting a transaction on one device and finding out that if you switch to another, you have to start all over again.”

To win in this environment, Whitmarsh said that organizations need to understand what’s important to their users. He cited statistics from the Zogby Report showing that speed is a high priority for consumers who are unwilling to wait for slow load times. Ease of use and security were also identified as important for users. Thirty-eight per cent of mobile users say they’re frustrated by application security issues, he said.

    The steps to five-star success

“Business intelligence can make you the hero,” said Whitmarsh.  “Getting the golden nuggets about the customer journey will tell you where to invest to get a five to one return versus what you get today.”

For organizations seeking to improve their customer experience ratings, collecting the data is the first step. Then the data has to be normalized in a central repository. By ensuring that all of the data correlates to the customer, rather than providing separate views of that customer for each channel. Finally, the data has to be analyzed to provide insights about the customer’s behaviour. “Traditionally, this has been done by running ad hoc reports,” said Whitmarsh. “But now, the tools can provide recommendations on how to improve.”

Whitmarsh said a good approach is to walk through the five “Ws”:

    • Who is using your applications?
    • Where and when are they using them?
    • What are they doing and what are your goals?
    • How can you improve their experience?

Understanding the answers to these questions will empower your organization in the omnichannel to create compelling personal experiences, said Whitmarsh. For example, it can allow the organization to do targeting based on geography or time of day and to provide more of what customers like, and less of what they don’t find valuable. “This is what builds customer loyalty,” said Whitmarsh.

“Gaining true business insights out of data will help your organization drive revenue, achieve customer satisfaction and retention. Those are the difference-makers that are going to separate you from the competition.”

    CA Technologies Updates Identity Suite

By Sean Michael Kerner  |  Posted 2016-12-02

New release of CA Identity Suite provides pre-configured policy templates to help organizations manage and deploy secure identity services.

CA Technologies announced an update to its CA Identity Suite on November 30, providing enterprises with new deployment, integration and security capabilities. The new CA Identity Suite version 14 release benefits from recent acquisitions made by CA.

"You need to have a model for how to ensure the appropriate access regardless of where the using is coming from or where the resources are located," Nick Nikols, SVP and Cybersecurity Business CTO at CA Technologies, told eWEEK. "Identity isn't about who you are, it's about what you do."

Nikols explained that the CA Identity Suite provides capabilities for access governance as well as enforcement features. He added that a goal of the new release is to simplify access governance with a user interface that is easier for business decision makers to use.

"We have also simplified how fast the CA Identity Suite can be be deployed," Nikols said.

In the past, Nikols noted that prior versions of Identity Suite would often involve the use of professional services with consulting in order to facilitate deployment. Nikols said that now, with the new release, even a high-availability configuration can be deployed rapidly. At the Gartner IAM (Identity and Access Management) conference on December 1, Nikols said that CA demonstrated on-stage how it was able to deliver a two-server deployment of Identity Suite within eight minutes.

Once the identity suite is deployed on servers, there is still a need for policy configuration, which is where another new enhancement comes in. Nikols explained that with the new Identity Suite release, there are now pre-packaged policy configurations for the most common use-cases. Policy configurations can now also be shared within an organization or community.

"We've turned the roll-out of Identity Suite from being a custom bespoke engagement which was time consuming, to something that can be deployed quickly and operational in short order," Nikols said.

Some of the new capabilities in the updated Identity Suite benefit from recent CA Technologies acquisitions. Among those acquisitions was one on June 8, 2015 of privately-held intelligent identity manager IdMlogic. Nikols said that some of the capabilities in the new release, including the ability to deliver the Identity Suite as a virtual appliance, were gained from IdMlogic.

The issue of maintaining a secure identity in a modern distributed enterprise is a non-trivial task. In addition to Microsoft's Active Directory which is widely used, Nikol noted that there are many identity repositories that are being used including other enterprise Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directories. He added that applications generally maintain their own identity repositories and authorization models.

"Federation facilitates the single sign on between these environments, but it has done little to simplify the management of all these copies of identities in each of these repositories," Nikols said. "CA Identity Suite is focused on orchestrating the management of all of these copies—making sure that their state is current and accurate, and that the proper entitlement settings are maintained within each of the applications' own authorization models."

"This makes it possible to have consistent information as well as authorization behavior established and maintained across these distributed environments," he said.

DevOps and Audits - Do You Feel Lucky? | DEVOPSdigest

    November 30, 2016

    Pete Waterhouse
    CA Technologies

In many ways running the gauntlet of audit is like playing out the "Do You Feel Lucky(link is external)" scene from the movie Dirty Harry. Even if organizations have bridged the chasm between Dev and Ops, their go-fast efforts can be shot to pieces by those darned list-wielding and trigger-happy compliance police.

Maverick cops aside, compliance is more critical than ever, especially given the increase in cybersecurity threats and potential for data breaches. What's more, as physical and digital becomes inseparable, organizations have an added responsibility – keeping customers secure and safe as they design, build, test and release software.

So perhaps the old-school approach of loading up the audit list "Magnum-44" and firing off at the end of a development cycle is the best way to mitigate risk. Better that than have all this new-fangled continuous delivery and silo-busting talk (no separation of duties - shock-horror) threaten the foundations of governance and regulatory control – or worse, result in customer harm.

But it doesn't have to be this way. Audit needn't kill innovation, just as DevOps shouldn't cause undue consternation for auditors. Each can and should benefit the other; it just takes some work and plain old common sense.

    Mutual Respect and Early Engagement

The earlier DevOps practitioners engage audit the better. Good auditors have broad perspectives regarding the world of business operations, which can be invaluable during application design, development and testing. Remember too, most auditors will be unfamiliar with modern DevOps practices, so education in context of how the new tools and automated processes benefit the auditing function is critical.

For example, take synthetic test data generation. All well and good for supporting our velocity goals, but also key evidence that a control strategy is in place to address a specific business risk – protecting customer information and sensitive data.

Many DevOps practices won't just be unfamiliar to auditors, they'll also be counterintuitive. Get ready for some friction (and more auditing) if a request for documented change control procedures is glibly rebuffed by developers stating that they don't exist, because – wait for it - they can deploy straight to production.

But there's no need to hit the panic button. The most important thing DevOps practitioners can do is to illustrate how internal procedures are still supporting controls' objectives – which can actually be easier when development and operations silos are removed. Like for example automatically initiating static-code analysis with a software build to ensure incorruptible code is moving through the pipeline – or development and IT operations working together during code reviews to ensure comprehensive application and infrastructure monitoring is established before production deployments.

Continuous Testing – the Auditing "Enforcer"

Impressing the value of DevOps practices (especially continuous testing) to auditors can also be beneficial. The communication and collaboration stimulated by automated testing can help auditors understand how business risks are being systemically managed.

For example, if security vulnerabilities are detected through an automated test during a software build, then the practice of failing the build becomes a key control surfaced by automation. Combine this with a rule that no production deployments can be made until the problem is fixed and the control becomes even better.

Of course it won't always be plain sailing. New automated methods of software validation may require more education, especially when they negate the need for the more traditional and familiar auditing controls. Be prepared to evidence how practices such as test-driven development (developers writing tests before coding) or requirements-based design (automatically generating test cases based on business requirements) are ensuring services deployed to production incur less risk.

It'll also be necessary to demonstrate how DevOps practices deliver controls that cater for production failures. For example, providing developers immediate access to application performance information specific to their code changes so they can quickly troubleshoot problems. Then by applying code fixes to the continuous delivery pipeline, tools such as release automation can demonstrate how resolutions are being applied faster or environments rolled back to a known good state.

From Box Ticking to Continuous Improvement

DevOps practices and auditing are not mutually exclusive; they're equally important in any business improvement program. By automating risk mitigation controls with DevOps and establishing bi-directional feedback loops, DevOps practitioners can quickly impress how new methods reduce business risk and support compliance goals – faster and with lower cost. Get this right and audit will view DevOps as less "tick in the box" and more as a value-added function.

In many ways audit is a real litmus-test for DevOps. It requires developers and IT operations purposefully collaborating and coordinating activities towards a top of mind boardroom issue – business governance. Sure, DevOps speed always grabs the headlines, but let's not forget the responsibility teams have in supporting many other corporate stakeholders and systems – including audit, risk management and compliance.

So the next time you get a visit from auditors – don't dread it or duck for cover – engage and demonstrate how DevOps supports shared business goals.

CA Technologies Announces Intent To Acquire Enterprise Automation Leader Automic

    Jason Bloomberg ,

    CONTRIBUTOR

I write and consult on digital transformation in the enterprise.

Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

CA Technologies announced today its intent to acquire Austria-based Automic Holding GmbH for approximately €600 million ($636 million). The respective boards of directors have approved the deal, which is expected to close by the end of March 2017.

CA CA -1.70% offers products in four portfolios: Agile, DevOps, mainframe, and security, while Automic delivers enterprise automation technology for automating both IT and business processes.

Each vendor recently touted both its digital transformation and DevOps strategies at recent customer events, and in fact, they have deep synergies in both areas. “Automic is super strong in digital transformation,” explains Mike Gregoire, CEO of CA Technologies. “It allows you to change with confidence.”

Whereas most vendors in the DevOps tools marketplace focus on the needs of developers, Automic brings deep experience with the operations environment to the DevOps story. This emphasis complements CA’s expanded support for developers via its 2015 acquisition of Rally Software, which led to its current Agile portfolio. (See my recent article on CA World.)

CA’s DevOps portfolio focuses on performance and quality, but has been weak in business process automation – a gap that Automic will be able to fill. “Automic adds a degree of automation across the software lifecycle,” explains Ayman Sayed, President and Chief Product Officer for CA. “We’ll provide an end-to-end platform for automation.”

The combination of the Rally and Automic technologies will give CA a solid DevOps story for both the developer and operations audiences, especially for enterprises with existing heterogeneous technology environments.

CA Technologies CEO Mike Gregoire (source: Jason Bloomberg)

CA Technologies CEO Mike Gregoire (source: Jason Bloomberg)

End-to-End: The Key to Enterprise Digital Transformation

Automic brings more to the table than its support for DevOps, however. Agile and DevOps primarily focus on new software development, but much of the enterprise technology story relies upon existing applications and systems.

Automic’s technology provides automation across a wide variety of mature, or ‘legacy’ assets, from mainframe-based applications to enterprise applications like ERP and CRM. In addition, Automic can automate processes in various cloud environments, providing enterprises with the ability to operate complex hybrid cloud scenarios. (See my recent article on Automic World.)

These diverse automation capabilities complement CA’s strengths with the mainframe, as CA already offers workload automation on the platform, whereas Automic can automate complex processes that touch multiple systems, from mainframes to cloud-based applications.

This end-to-end automation capability is essential for enterprise digital initiatives, as customers and other users must interact with back-office systems of record via their devices – a fundamental requirement for applications as diverse as mobile banking, ecommerce, and patient-centered care in healthcare.

    Automation: All About Speed

The common thread across CA’s and Automic’s respective product strategies is speed – speed of software deployment in the DevOps arena, as well as speed to market for the business. “Our customers’ number one issue is speed to market and how to continuously improve their products,” Gregoire says.

Velocity may be paramount, but not at the expense of reliability, scalability, or security. “Enterprise customers are engaging with vendors to support their digital transformation initiatives to increase velocity, reliability and scalability among their businesses processes,” says Todd DeLaughter, Chief Executive Officer, Automic. “Together with CA Technologies, we will help organizations further propel their intelligent automation capabilities to the next level, driving the agility and speed demanded in this era of Digital Transformation.”

Bringing business velocity to both the software lifecycle and the digital business, end-to-end from digital touchpoint to system of record, is the primary technical challenge facing every enterprise today in one form or another. The addition of Automic gives CA Technologies a complete offering for any enterprise struggling with this broadest of digital challenges.

Intellyx publishes the Agile Digital Transformation Roadmap poster, advises companies on their digital transformation initiatives, and helps vendors communicate their agility stories. As of the time of writing, CA Technologies is an Intellyx customer. None of the other organizations mentioned in this article are Intellyx customers. CA Technologies and Automic covered Jason Bloomberg’s expenses to their respective customer conferences, a standard industry practice.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(Veja meu artigo recente sobre o CA World.)

(Veja meu artigo recente sobre o Automic World.)

    Automação: Tudo Sobre a Velocidade

(Vea mi reciente artículo sobre CA World.)

(Ver mi reciente artículo sobre Automic World.)

(Voir mon article récent sur CA World.)

(Voir mon article récent sur Automic World.)

All About Speed
