This How To blog is for those who signed up for the "Bring Your Own License" (BYOL) offering on either the AWS Marketplace or Microsoft Azure and need to insert their license and start the CA Service Virtualization tool. Here are the steps to follow to insert your license and start up the SV services on your new virtual machine.

1. Find your License Email. This is typically from a "DoNotReply@ca.com" email address with the subject line including the words "License Activation". ATtached to the email will be a file called "devtestlic.xml". This is the file you need to add to your virtual machine.

2. Place the devtestlic.xml file in the install directory for CA Service Virtualization - C:\Program Files\CA\DevTest

devtestlicxml.png

3. Start the DevTest Services in the order listed below - Note all services are readily accessible on the bottom toolbar on your Desktop

StartOrder.png

  • 1. Start Enterprise Dashboard Server (wait until ready)
  • 2. Start Registry (wait until ready)
  • 3. Start Virtual Service Environment
  • 4. Start Portal
  • 5. Start Simulator
  • 6. Start Coordinator

4. Open the Portal UI and Get Started!

Double Click on the "DevTest Portal UI" and sign in with the default user name/password - admin/admin

How to Get Started with CA Service Virtualization on Demand in Microsoft Azure - YouTube

During the month of July 2016, here are the updates to ideas. The goal of these monthly updates is to give you one place each month to see which ideas statuses have changed so that you can focus your attention to the updates that may be important to you and your team.

The list below is sorted by the status and then the category or product. For details on why the status was changed, just click on the link to the idea and check out our comments and notes.

Delivered: These features are GA! Comment on them to tell us what you think of them.

Currently Planned - We have these in our backlog as a high priority and our team is working to get them into the next major or minor release. Your comments are valuable here as we're in the process of building.

Wish Listed - We agree these are important ideas but either need more information or don't have it planned yet for a release. We've placed it in our agile backlog for prioritization. Vote for these ideas to move them up the priority list!

Not Planned - We don't feel these ideas are aligned to our product strategy. They are not planned for now or future.

Due to issues found after the release of 9.5, today we released build 9.5.1 to GA.

9.5.1 is being replicated now and will be posted to support.ca.com in the next few hours (you may see it now depending on your region). 9.5.1 will replace 9.5 and we will remove the 9.5 release from the support site tomorrow morning (after 9.5.1 replication is complete).

When we refer to 9.5 in future posts, we'll be referring to the 9.5.1 build so those who are using 9.5 today are encouraged to replace with 9.5.1 as soon as possible to alleviate any issues or confusion.

The changes/fixes in 9.5.1 are published here: https://docops.ca.com/devtest-solutions/9-5/en/release-notes/resolved-issues-for-9-5-1

Also, ICYMI, Video Demos of the new features in 9.5 are now available on this YouTube Playlist

The DevTest Community has grown to over 1200 followers over the past few years. Activity has increased tremendously over the past few months with lots of new users and content. It's great to have a thriving community to help support our customers and pass along best practices and ideas to make our products better.

But the question I have for you is... "What are you doing here?!?"...

Well, it's more like, "What would you like to get out of this community and what do you do with our product?" but that was way to long for a blog title.

So why not tell us a little bit about yourself and your expectations of this community so that we can tailor content to fit your needs.

You won't regret filling out this survey. We plan to share some demographic information about who is here and what they do with the DevTest products. Don't worry, we won't share your personal info, just planning to aggregate the info and share the stats with you so we can be less like Lisa Simpson....

and more like Jimmy Fallon...

Oh, did I mention that you should take this survey?

We're gearing up over here in CA-land to get out a new release in the next few months. I wanted to share with you one key tidbit on what we're changing in this next release.

We're getting rid of the DevTest Server Console! Yea, this guy running on port 1505 is going bye-bye and we're replacing it with interfaces in the DevTest Portal!

Screen Shot 2016-04-28 at 12.07.13 PM.png

The new UI in DevTest portal will include:

  • Virtual Service Environment Monitor - This replaces the "VSE" in Server Console. It's actually available today in DevTest 8.5, 9.0 and 9.1 if you want to take a look and start using it. It's quite nice and much easier to find the virtual service you are looking for quickly.
  • Reporting - Another area that is already in the DevTest Portal, reporting was introduced in 9.0 and enhanced in 9.1. This is a much easier way to view your test results. More details on all the reports available today are here:
  • Continuous Validation Service (CVS) - This feature is another one that was introduced in 9.1 so you can check it out now.
  • Server Health Monitor - This was the main screen in Server Console where you could monitor your VSEs, Simulators and Coordinator servers through a graph. Now, in the new DevTest Portal, you'll have a quick chart to monitor and track server uptime, CPU usage, Memory Consumption and Server information for each of these assets.
  • Access Control Settings - This functionality will be moved from the DevTest Console over to the DevTest Portal in the next release. It includes setting Roles, Users, Resource Groups and Resources for the folks that will be using the DevTest tool.
  • Set Password - This is a new feature allowing the end-user to change their password within the DevTest Portal UI. This feature is only available for those who are NOT using the LDAP integration. For those using LDAP integration, password management is directly through LDAP.

So, what are your thoughts on this change? Check out some of these screenshots:

Software teams never have enough time. Our goal is to make the life of developers and testers easier so that you can spend more time playing video games and making fun of product managers. Service Virtualization (or SV) steps in to help give you back the time you need removing the system, data, 3rd party and parallel development constraints that plague us all.

Most of us on this community get this message loud and clear, but how can you share this amazing technology with your friends and colleagues? We have a solution for that... actually 3 solutions for that:

  1. Screen Shot 2016-03-29 at 10.41.50 PM.png SV for Developers: If they're needing to virtualize REST services, give them the link to our ServiceMock.io site. Here they can sign up quickly with their GitHub account and start building out live virtual service in minutes. It's a great way to teach the concepts of Service Virtualization while not having to install anything or commit to a contract.
  2. SV on Demand: Try out the full CA Service Virtualization 9.0 product for free for 30-days on the Microsoft Azure platform. Newbies can use their Azure credits to pay the platform costs while enjoying their 30-day trial period of CA Service Virtualization. A few simple clicks and they will have the full product up and running from a DevTest Portal to a full Virtual Service Environment on a single virtual machine. After the 30-days, they can continue to work on the VM for $6.85 per hour or decide to move forward to the next step. CA Service Virtualization On Demand on Microsoft Azure Marketplace
  3. Bring Your Own License of SV: If your company has already purchased licenses of CA Service Virtualization but you or a colleague want an easy way to deploy the latest release to Azure, we have the solution for you. CA Service Virtualization 9.0 BYO License is now available for you to deploy on demand on the Azure Marketplace. You'll only pay the Azure platform (networking/hardware) charges and the CA Service Virtualization solution will just take your existing SV license and give you full access to the software as you have it today, just in an easily deployed model. CA Service Virtualization On Demand on Microsoft Azure Marketplace BYOL

We've found many of our existing customers using these options to help in training, sharing the tool before hardware or a full deployment is ready, testing out new features in the latest releases or with the BYOL model - to host their entire solution in the cloud. Let us know if you have used any of the options above and what you thought of the solutions. Also, we have a bit of voting going on for our next trial offering. Please share your feedback on this poll:

Where would you like us to offer a 30-day free trial?

CA Service Virtualization /CA Application Test/ CA Application Insight r9.0

We are pleased to announce that DevTest 9.0 including CA Service Virtualization, CA Application Test and CA Continuous Application Insight 9.0 is generally available (GA) as of November 16, 2015.  This release includes significant enhancement to our products based on customer feedback focused around increased ease-of-use, team collaboration tools and automation to enable your teams to deliver higher quality applications, faster.

One of the more notable items in this release is the introduction of new delivery and consumption models for CA Service Virtualization that will be announced on Wednesday, November 18th. From Open Source tools to SaaS offerings, to 30-day Trials to our fully enterprise licensed software, developers can start anywhere in this journey depending on their experience and testing needs. We are excited to share more details with you on Wednesday, so look out for the press release and blog!

Here is a summary of the key functionality introduced in DevTest 9.0:

CA Service Virtualization 9.0

Enables cross-team collaboration within a single web user interface

  • Data Driven Virtual Services lower the technical bar so that anyone can create a virtual service and Automated Test Case Generation removes the manual work required to build automated tests.
  • Virtual Service Monitor provides a single pane of glass view for administrators and users to manage, take action, monitor and troubleshoot.
  • Advanced Access Controls eases enterprise adoption by mapping access control to customers existing LDAP hierarchy.

Simplifies virtual service creation for the business analyst and QA teams

  • Data Driven Virtual Services allow users to work in excel and enter business data to create virtual services that do not exist in the real world. They can use this data to automatically test their service in minutes instead of days/weeks.
  • Advanced Virtual Service Editing gives users the power to mock out positive and negative test scenarios providing predictive testing of systems before getting to production.

Supports both new and traditional protocols

  • Added support for Microservices driven standards like SWAGGER 2.0 and RabbitMQ.
  • Expanded support for legacy technologies like IBM MQ Series and Copybooks.

CA Application Test 9.0 provides deeper insight into test results with reports and more consistent test frameworks for mobile and UI testing.

  • New Reports on test results and metrics are available in the DevTest Portal. Users can also set runtime properties or tags when running a test so that they can query the tags later – for example you can tag a build number for system under test and then run a report focused on that single system and build.
  • A Common Test Framework for browser and mobile testing makes it easier to record and edit automated test cases without needing to understand different workflows.

CA Continuous Application Insight 9.0

Reduces Hours of Manual Work with the ability to Automatically Generate Tests

  • Deep ValidationInvoke and Verify generates API tests in seconds to invoke business logic and verify a system of record is updated.
  • Functional test generation from user Journey enables users to evolve past UI tests that cause false failures, and onto API validation that tests end-to-end business logic.

Reduces Regression Test Cycle Time to Increase Speed to Production

  • Observing live systems and mapping producer-consumer relationships document Common API’s. Automatic test cases and virtual services are generated to increase regression coverage and reduce production defects.

We’ve also added some significant common functionality across the DevTest 9.0 product-line including:

  • New Docker Images delivered in the DevTest Linux installer to simplify the deployment of virtual service and test environments.
  • Improved ACL implementation with role inheritance form existing LDAP groups to simplify administration of the DevTest tools.

As you can see, our DevTest team is serious about your ability to adopt, use and find value from our products. We appreciate your partnership and continued feedback along the way to make these products work best for your business needs.

Today we spent the day reviewing every single demo and all the content we're going to share in the over 50 DevOps sessions at CA World 2015. From what I can tell, it's going to be completely awesome! My favorite part of the conference is hearing your feedback on what we've built. With the launch of DevTest 9.0 and 12 of our customers on stage to talk about how our products are helping with their DevOps transformation, I couldn't be more pleased with what we're headed into next week.

If you haven't already checked it out, the CA World 15 mobile app is available to use now.  Make sure you connect with our team on the app!

Also, VOTE for the "Crowdsourced Session" that you'd want to see. Our presenters are already rallying for votes. Thomas_Stolt, walre04, Anand_AK_Kameswaran

Let me introduce you to a few more folks that will be at CA World this year...

ian.png

Ian A. Kelly - I'm a Senior Director of Product Management and am looking forward to the full slate of sessions and the opportunity to talk 1:1 with customers at CA World 15. You can find me in the DevOps Theater 3 space and at the Service Virtualization for Developers Booth.

My Session Recommendation: Pre-CA World Training sessions are always great – gives the chance to look under the covers and discuss issues with your peers

Other Tips: Always love to meet with smart folks and share approaches to problems, CA World is a great forum for these type of discussions. Ask me about our latest Open Source Developer tool that will be released at CA World.

HeatherHeadShot.jpg.jpeg

Heather Peyton - I'm the Principal Product Marketing Manager for CA Test Data Management and CA Test Case Optimizer. These are newly acquired products from GridTools. I'm very much looking forward to meeting peers, clients and partners and hearing feedback on the new solutions being released. I'll be at the Continuous Delivery - Theater 4 information booth in the DevOps area.

My Session Recommendation: DO3T06S - Vision and Roadmap: The CA Roadmap for Service Virtualization and the Dev and Test Portfolio with Chris_Kraus

KW_bio_pic.JPG.jpeg

Koustubh Warty - I'm a Principal Engineering Services Architect on the DevTest SWAT team. I'm looking forward to evangelizing our DevTest product as well as talking and listening to customer requirements. Also excited to talk to you about the new SV on Demand offering in addition to how DevTest supports Docker! I’ll be in the Theater 3 on the SV Use Cases booth. Please stop by and look at the common use cases that SV solves and get a head start on your service virtualization journey.

My Session Recommendation: Pre-Con Education: CA Service Virtualization 9.0—What's the Latest and Greatest with Stefana_Muller

Other Tips: I’ll be more than happy to assist you with your questions and am excited to meet with a lot of people in person that I have interacted with via emails and on the phone.

chrisR.jpeg

Chris Rowett - I am the Vice President of Technical Sales for Application Delivery and am based in the UK. I can't wait to hear our customers talk on the innovation they have driven and the related business impacts created using CA solutions.  I'll spend most of my time during the conference in the Executive Center but will stop by the booth often to check out the new DevTest 9.0 release.

My Session Recommendation: The customer presentations from ING, Euroclear, Akbank and others are the ones to watch.

Other Tips: Looking at the agenda there’s never been a stronger CA World, especially for anyone on a transformation journey to DevOps / Agile / Continuous Delivery. The amount of relevant Case Studies, Tech Talks, Hand-on Labs and Panels is outstanding. The biggest challenge is going to be choosing what to miss, rather than what to go to.

rob.jpeg

Rob Karlin - I’m a Senior Principal Consultant with our DevOps presales team in the Chicago area. CA World is where I can hear how our customers are innovating using our DevTest platform and sharing new product capabilities that ignite SDLC transformation, generate growth and manage development and testing cost. You can find me at the Smart Bar, where I will be available to discuss capabilities around CA Application Test and CA Service Virtualization.

My Session Recommendation: I have two - Pre-Con Education: How to Test the New Fashioned Way and Tech Talk: Ready, Set, Shop—Three Ways to Performance Test Your Applications Before Your Next Big Shopping Wave

Countdown to CA World 2015 - Meet the Staff Part 2!

Let's start with one of my favorites...

Simon photo.jpg.jpeg

Simon Cockayne - I am the Sr. Principal Product Manager for the innovative CA App Services Orchestrator (ASO) product and am all about Nurturing Happiness. I am excited to LISTEN to customers telling stories about the problems and pain they face, and figure out if and how me and my CA buddies can bring a little more happiness to their days. You can find me mostly in the DevOps area talking about the Vision and Roadmap for ASO…and demoing our developer-delighting API orchestration capabilities.

My Session Recommendation: I am looking forward to the “Women in Technology Breakfast”. I am the father of two children. A son, Gabriel, 8. A daughter, Abigail, 5. I hope they grow up in a future where they are not judged by their gender, but rather by their talents, experience and potential. I strongly applaud and try to support any effort, that moves society towards that vision.

Other Notes: I’ll be talking to anyone and everyone, not just about WHAT we are building here at CA, but HOW we are building stuff. I want to share stories of how our principles-driven approach is allowing us to move faster, to build stuff that really matters.

and my taco buddy when ever we visit Plano, TX...

Alan Baptista - I’m responsible for CA Service Virtualization Product marketing. I am looking forward to hearing from so many SV customers at CA World 2015. We have never had SO MANY customers presenting on SV (12 sessions in all). I will be EVERYWHERE. I am responsible for our DevTest Solutions content, so if I’m not opening sessions or introducing speakers, I’ll be on the two expo floor demo areas dedicated to our solutions.

My Session Recommendation: My favorite session is  DO3X118S: Technology Primer: The Why, Where and How of Service Virtualization Adoption (well.. because I get the pleasure of presenting with Stefana Muller on how many of our customers have implemented their Service Virtualization solutions and how we at CA may help).

Other Tips: Wear comfortable shoes, visit the demos and make sure to stay tuned to GREAT Service Virtualization news @ CA World 2015.  Hope to see you there.

Scott 2015 Pic5.jpeg

Scott Edwards - I’m the Director of Product Marketing for the CA DevTest portfolio, and what I’m looking forward to the most at CA World is seeing how our customers use our products. Case in point, I’m totally excited to see both Nordstrom (D03T21S) and T-Mobile (D04T17S) discuss their use of multiple application delivery products. These, and many others, will talk about how they rely on CA solutions to deliver exceptional application quality and drive their continuous delivery strategy.  I’ll be hanging out in both the DevOps 3 and DevOps 4 theaters talking our Service Virtualization and Quality Acceleration value props.  If you have your own success story to tell about the CA DevTest portfolio, reach out to me.  I’d love to hear it, and introduce you to IT Central Station who will be onsite interviewing customers about their use of our products.

It’s gonna be a fun time!  Can’t wait for the food, fun, friends, and new product launches coming in November.

That's all for this week. Expect some more intros, suggestions and interesting photos on our "Meet the Staff" entry for next week. In the meantime, if you missed our last blog, here's a quick link Countdown to CA World 2015 - Meet the Staff! (DevOps Theater 3)

It's almost 1 month until we all hit the ground running at CA World 2015 and we all recently got the final word on our staff assignments. I'm excited to attend the conference once again this year and will be hosting a few awesome sessions as usual. However, let's start this "Meet the Staff" blog series with a few new folks you may not have met in the past. Below is a fun group that will be demoing in our DevOps Theater 3 area. They each give you insight on where to find them at the conference and what session they recommend trying out.

20150925_073408.jpg.jpeg

Anand Kameswaran - You can call me AK for short. I'm the Product Owner for CA Service Virtualization and am looking forward to meeting our customers as well as colleagues from around the globe at CA World 2015. I'll be spending most of my time at the DevTest Demo booths during the conference. They're in DevOps Theater 3 and look for me especially at the SV innovations booth.

My Session Recommendation: CA DevOps Simulation Experience on Tuesday.  Learning new ways to develop and deploy software is not usually fun.  This is!

Other Tips: Make sure you get plenty of REST at CA World.  It helps maintain your Swagger (2.0) at the tables.  Yes, I went there. Oh, and I don't mind if you ask me about the Testing Goat.

DanielHeadShot1-squareMed.jpg

Daniel Bingham - I'm the Architect for CA Service Virtualization (LISA) and this is my first ever CA World. I'm looking forward to showing everyone the latest on CA Service Virtualization 9.0 and I'll be helping out at the pre-conference training as well as demoing in the DevTest Demo booths in Theater 3.

My Session Recommendation: Pre-Con Education: Introduction to CA Service Virtualization

Other Tips: I'm researching different options to integration CA SV with source control tools. Would love to hear your thoughts on that as well as what your plans are for Docker and PaaS deployment.

Screen Shot 2015-10-12 at 7.09.01 PM.png

Thomas Stolt - I'm a Partner Technology Architect out of CA Germany. I'm looking forward to learning together with Partners and Customers the newest things about CA Technologies and its solutions! I will spend most of my time in the DevOps area at CA World, but am determined to give all other areas at least a visit. Speaking to colleagues, product managers, executives and engineers is what I am looking forward to!

My Session Recommendation: Of course our CA DevOps Simulation Experience on Tuesday, that I will be leading!! It brings DevOps to life, like nothing else that we know, we have run almost a hundred of them World Wide, bringing this to almost 1,000 people; suffice to say that this is probably the most advanced, intensive, open, honest and fun(!) learning program around DevOps that exists worldwide.

Other Tips/Insights: My strategy is to “land and learn” – to land at CA World and learn what I can from the best in the industry.

AdiPandit-FakeOlympicBronze.jpg.jpeg

Adi Pandit – I am a Sr. Principal Software Engineer for CA Service Virtualization. I work on virtualization and virtualization accessories. I am very excited to demo the Service Image Editor and Data Driven Signature features developed by my team. I am always inspired by the smart ways our field engineers and customers adopt our product and keep pushing the envelope of application testing and virtualization. Looking forward to meeting some of you at the conference. You can find me at the DevTest demo booths at DevOps Theater 3.

My Session Recommendation : Come see where we are headed and help us get there :-) DO3T06S: Vision and Roadmap: The CA Roadmap for Service Virtualization and the Dev and Test Portfolio

Other Tips: My favorite part of the DevTest stack are the extensions. I am eager to hear about what your teams have done or would like to do in that area.

dewayne.jpeg

Dewayne McNair - I lead Engineering for Service Virtualization and Application Test, and I’m excited about meeting our customers, partners, and other team members at CA World 2015.  I will be assisting at several of the pre-conference sessions, and you can catch me during the show at the Executive Center and at the DevTest demo booths in Theater 3.  We have an exiting array of new features to show and discuss - you don’t want to miss it!

My Session Recommendation:  Don’t miss Pre-Con Education: Build Your Own Virtual API, and for those looking at containers, be sure to attend Tech Talk: Service Virtualization "Dockerized". Check out the program guide attached below for details.

Other Tips:  Service and API Virtualization are still relatively new approaches of removing constraints in your development process.  Coupled with Test Automation, you can get solid improvements in your throughput and reduce your cycle time for delivering value to *your* customers.  Jump in with both feet - it’s time!

You have to admit, the open platform that Docker provides is a game-changer for application development. The CA engineering team uses Docker along with our CA Release Automation and DevTest solutions to enable our continuous integration of code changes.  This has helped us to move to a monthly release cadence while still maintaining our high quality software.

A few months ago we began sharing our continuous integration work with our Customer Validation team in an effort to learn from others how they are using tools like Docker to speed up releases.

We've seen a large group of customers use Docker within their continuous delivery process and more recently some have used Docker to easily deploy CA Service Virtualization or CA Application Test to a Platform as a Service (PaaS) environment (like AWS or Azure). One customer shared how they are deploying Simulators/Coordinators for use during performance testing and then tearing them down when they are done. Another gave insight to how they are auto-deploying a VSE server along with a running virtual service for a specific need and then tearing it down when done.

This "deploy and destroy" model is helpful when consuming hardware/services from a PaaS as you can reduce your cost by only hosting/running your tools when and where you need them.  With Docker Containers packaging up the OS and application in a single bundle, you can easily run our DevTest products on any infrastructure or any cloud that Docker supports.

In release 8.3, we shared the ability to create Docker Containers of the DevTest solutions to easily deploy DevTest instances in various environments. Lead engineer Jeff Tresselt (treje05) gave a thourough demo of how to build the containers adding in your DevTest license and any file-system customizations.  There is definitely more to come here and we welcome your feedback on enhancements we can make to this process.

Here is the video of Jeff's demo - please feel free to leave feedback, comments, additional use cases or questions in the "Comments" section below.
