More About User Written Database Procedures

By Gary Cherlet posted Jan 12, 2015 03:55 PM

This paper, originally written in 1991, has been updated and republished here to provide additional, in-depth looks at 3 different uses of database procedures. The interesting part of this paper is that, for each of the 3 case studies, it examines alternative solutions to the use of database procedures - and ultimately the reasons why a database procedure was used. There is some value in considering some of the alternatives - as they may be appropriate for use in other applications with similar requirements.

For details on the implementation of a database procedure for encryption purposes - then you will want to refer IUAD6 Database Procedures for Security.pdf paper available at  https://communities.ca.com/docs/DOC-231151387 ,  from the December 2014 IUA/EIUA Workshop in Framingham.

Oh, and why is the paper called "Database Procedures for Fun and Profit"? As originally presented, the session was meant to be "fun" because back in the 1980's the use of user written database procedures was fairly new and exciting. There was also a "profit" motive because the presenter was a contractor at the time - and there was a sub-agenda of "hire us to help you to do useful things like this - if you think you may have the need".

As always - feedback is welcome - take care - cheers - GaryC
