PPM Insights: Surviving-to-Thriving, Transformation Begins with CA PPM Vision and Roadmap

By Anon Anon posted Nov 17, 2016 03:44 PM

This series of blogs elaborates on a few hot topics presented at CA World that I think will directly interest and impact PPM practitioners. In doing so, I have collaborated with Bryan Reid, a Senior Director of Practice Services at CA (and incidentally, a former customer, as am I). I first met Bryan when we were on the Customer Advisory Board for CA PPM a few years ago, and truly respected his passion for enabling the outcomes that customers needed.

While we can’t cover every detail in this blog, we can focus on three initiatives that we believe are the most impactful, whether you’re building a practice, planning an upgrade or doing initial research. We will be referencing the “Vision and Roadmap: CA Project & Portfolio Management” session:

  1. Vision Overview
  2. CA PPM 15.1 Reimagined (latest release)
  3. Roadmap

Below is an introductory slide that summarizes the thinking about CA PPM (and the entire software industry):

We also want to emphasize that the latest release has greatly increased usability. For more, see my blogs "New CA PPM 15.1 Functionality Improves User Adoption and Builds Business Value" Part 1 & Part 2.

Here’s a high-level summary:

Also, Bryan and I want to share a few key insights around the roadmap:

FocusWhat's In It For You?

Extending the Power of the Data Warehouse:  Power BI Connector

This is an exciting topic for me because it’s not taboo to use Tableau or Power BI. Reporting is perceived as the most impactful driver of delivered insight that PPM processes and tools have, and we will have a connector to enable SaaS data warehouse integration to third party BI solutions (Power BI, Tableau).

Adaptive Project Management

With features like the “Living Status Report”, everyone benefits from stop chasing team members and start consuming/crowdsourcing. This emphasizes the results and productivity, not process:

  • Understand what the team or an individual is working on
  • Capture artifacts in context of the project
  • Communicating in context of the work being performed

Other real life value for Project Managers and team is that it is live online, can move sections, toggle back and forth between tiles/data points including a 2 week rolling project calendar.

Time and work Transparency

I like this because It’s about TIME! Time Entry & Mass Approvals for the Millennial Mindset drives broad user adoption across the enterprise:

  • Deliver additional functionality while improving the overall user experience
  • Enter time for others
  • Filter Approvals by other Resource Managers & OBS
  • Copy Charge Code and Input Type Code when copying a time row
Reinventing Resource Management

Everyone is trying to find the magic filters to address the problems you need to address, and you don’t need to do that anymore:

  • Telescope into the right time period
  • Pin the people you want to work on
  • Fix the problem

Connect and Collaborate

Elevate current Project level conversation capabilities to that of a social experience:

  • Collaborate in context of the work being performed
  • Comment on a post
  • @mention with notification in the browser
  • Apply and search by tag(s)
  • Search by contributor
Better Together

This is about keeping engineers in the context of their workspace

Integrated PPM Time inside of Agile Central. It enables response to customer demand for an integrated cost management solution for both PPM and Agile Central.

Please be on the lookout for other communications about the vision and roadmap. Many thanks to Bryan for his insights. For readers interested in more detail, CA World content will be published here after the conference closes. I also encourage you to participate in the best-in-class CA Communities site, where you have access to communications, events and support. (Over the years, Bryan and I have gained great benefits from the peer-to-peer interactions. As you may have heard me say, we can’t achieve our desired outcomes with software alone, and I believe that this knowledge exchange is imperative to our success.) In addition, you can reach out to CA Services for individualized business outcomes references and analysis. Feel free to post in the comments section of this blog or contact me directly via email and Twitter @PPMWarrior or Bryan @Bryan_C_Reid.
