One of the major impacts of the dynamic nature of DevOps and the software-based economy is how network services are delivered. Not long ago, whenever there was a need for new applications or systems, the applications, infrastructure and network ops teams would sit together and create an elaborate plan for the project.

Network engineers would provide a blue print for the network changes and connectivity requirements, an estimate for the new load on the network, and an update to the traffic policy. All the planned changes would go through manual testing cycles before the physical effort would begin to get the new services into production.

This is all about to change.

Welcome to the era of Software Defined Networking (SDN), Software Defined Data Center (SDDC)) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV). These technologies help eliminate a lot of the manual intervention for deploying new applications and infrastructures. With software defined infrastructure, network ops teams can provision applications and infrastructure automatically based on a repeatable set of policies. Depending on how the policies are defined, network and L4-L7 services can be deployed with little or no manual intervention or conference room committee meetings.

While flexibility and automation have many benefits, SDN, SDDC and NFV can increase the complexity for network monitoring teams. As new applications and infrastructure are deployed, this dynamic inventory can create blind spots that weren’t anticipated or outlined in an elaborate blue print. Network ops teams may only become aware of the new apps or infrastructure when an issue occurs that impacts the user experience.

As such, network asset discovery, topology mapping and monitoring must also be automated and dynamic. Integration with the orchestration layers for SDN, SDDC and NFV is paramount to empowering the flexibility and reducing the complexity. The CA Spectrum product team is proud of the ecosystem we have embraced with the likes of Cisco, Juniper, VMware, Nuage and Viptella and open source projects like Open Daylight, OpenShift and Open vSwitch.

Engineering lockstep with these leaders and industry efforts ensures that new dynamic inventory technologies can deliver the requirements of DevOps and the software economy and your CA network monitoring solution is ready.

CA Spectrum and CA Unified Infrastructure Management (UIM) are powerful monitoring tools helping enterprises in improving network service levels no matter how complex. The value proposition is accelerated issue resolutions and faster adoption of innovative technologies.  In this blog post I will shed some light over the much awaited CA Spectrum and CA UIM integration which is now generally available with CA Spectrum 10.2

What does integration entail?

The integration will sync inventory and alarms from CA Spectrum to CA UIM and vice versa. Several customers participated in an earlier beta program this year where alarms and inventory sync from CA UIM to CA Spectrum. We received invaluable information back from that beta and are pleased to announce these additional enhancements to the GA version.

  •      Inventory sync from CA UIM to CA Spectrum
  •      Inventory sync from CA Spectrum to CA UIM
    •  Customers can select the inventory to be synced by adding it to the container they chose to sync
  •      Alarms sync has also been enhanced to give the option to select the direction of sync. The administrator can choose to sync:
    •   Only from CA Spectrum to CA UIM
    •   Only from CA UIM to CA Spectrum
    •   Or both ways, CA UIM to CA Spectrum AND CA Spectrum to CA UIM

Benefits of the Integration

Though CA Spectrum and CA UIM have their own unique value add for an enterprise; ultimately they help monitor the network infrastructure. The integration is intended to reduce duplication of efforts for an administrator who might be using CA Spectrum for fault isolation and root cause analysis and CA UIM at the same time for optimizing the infrastructure. Once the integration is setup, the administrator will be able to view the inventory and alarms from both CA Spectrum and CA UIM in a single admin console. This will enable the administrators to continue to use the solution of their choice with the advantage of seeing all relevant information at one place. More importantly they will be able to perform actions and drive alarm related workflows using any of these two solutions which will reflect in both the solutions. So for example, if the administrator wants to assign an alarm to a troubleshooter in their team, they can simply do that using either CA Spectrum or CA UIM and it will reflect on the other solution!

How to setup the integration

The integration can be set up in two easy steps:

  1.       Enable the integration in CA Spectrum. The administrator has the option to select what inventory they would like to sync from CA UIM to CA Spectrum

  1.        Activate the integration in CA UIM by activating and configuring the spectrumgtw probe on the UIM admin console. The administrator has flexibility to configure the frequency, time and direction of sync.

Bingo! You will start seeing the sync result within few minutes. You can get more details about the setup in CA Spectrum documentation. Once the integration is set up successfully, you will see the inventory and alarms synced. Once a full sync has happened, the incremental syncs continue periodically based on your configuration of spectrumgtw probe.

See the bidirectional integration in action, from the steps to set up, to syncing inventory and alarms in both products:

Organizations are adopting IT Service Management for strategic approach for designing, delivering, managing and improving the information technology (IT). ITSM as a primary function provides incident control, life cycle management of all service requests, and communicating with the customer. Also serves as a Single Point of Contact between a company’s customers, employees and business partners.

CA Spectrum now integrates with World Class IT Service Management Tools:

  • CA Service Desk
  • CA Cloud Service Management
  • BMC Remedy
  • HP Service Manager
  • SAP Solution Manager
  • ServiceNow
  • Salesforce Service Cloud

The key use cases which will help operators further:

  • Association of Spectrum Alarms with Tickets:
    • Manually creates tickets when requested by OneClick operators
    • Automatically creates tickets based on alarm type
    • Automatically creates tickets using Spectrum Alarm Notification Manager functionality
  • Maintains the consistency of the following information that is shared between a Spectrum alarm and its associated Tickets:
    • Status of alarms and associated tickets
    • Current assignee (troubleshooter) assigned to tickets
  • Provides a link to directly launch a Service Desk view of a particular ticket from within the Spectrum OneClick console.

With the help of these integrations CA Spectrum enables communication between the operations center and the service desk. Which helps in automating efficient workflow process which reduces your MTTR and hence lowers overall management costs.

Joerg Facebook.jpgJoerg Liesenfeld has been a support engineer for nearly two decades. Today, Jorerg is a familiar site in the IM Community and supports CA Spectrum as a dedicated engineer in Germany. He says he has been with CA for so long because of technical challenges, and the great support team in EMEA.

“Support has changed at operational level here – but overall the always and ever most important thing is: The Customer. That will never change (I hope) and having a very good relationship to the customer is a requirement for support.”

Joerg says the CA communities help him keep that focus on the customer.

“The Communities provide customers the communication entry point to our technical organization. This is an important tool/service.”

Aaron2014.jpgOutside of work Joerg keeps the focus on his family. They have one gorgeous dog named Aaron, a cat, and a rabbit all living in their big garden. He also spends any other free minute he has just having fun with  "friends on wheels". (Wheels include MTB-riding, Race-biking, Triathlons, SuperMoto and much more!)

"...you only have few years time for this ," says Joerg. "Life is just great!"

Even with all of our new communication tools and self-service technologies, Joerg keeps focus on continuing to develop personal relationships with his customers and give them the best support possible.

You will see we have tried to be honest with the ones we cannot foresee being implemented with the product - in many cases because it is a MAJOR and/or risky change.

I am happy to discuss these or get challenged on our analysis for those - as mentioned, we are very trying to be as transparent as possible.

We will continue with these posts and you will see many more ideas coming to fruition with our next release of Spectrum in 2H 2015.

Would again encourage the team to vote for ideas and give then suggestions - we listen!

As we plan our next few releases, you have an opportunity to further shape the product direction and capabilities - do voice your opinions.

Also, would request people to send their responses to the WiFi Management post and questions - it is critical that our design is aligned with what you have and what you want:

WLC-AP Deployment Model..

Look out for an invite from the Community Managers for a Webcast in the coming months where we will share the progress on our next release and also give a sneak peek into the Spectrum Web Client for Operators - we are very excited!

As always, suggestions, feedback and critique very welcome.

Regards,

Kiran Diwakar
