An Old Tech Tale: Are we there yet?

By Haylee_Thikeo posted May 14, 2015 02:49 PM

Old tech tales are the stories we share with this generation about products and services that has completely changed or become obsolete due to the advancement of technology. We’ve learned that overtime keeping our technology and software current and up-to date is necessary to remain competitive in this application economy. However while we often look ahead at upcoming trends in technology, rarely do we joyfully reminisce about the past. Join me and the Customer Lifecycle Solutions group in sharing some of our favorite, funny, and almost embarrassing experiences with old technology. The latest tale in this series is from Titus Moore, CLS VP Business Strategy - Service Management and Automation.

Old Technology Campaign_Titus.pngIt was 1991. My brother and I decided to road trip from Atlanta to Panama City Beach while he was visiting from  college.

We had planned for this weekend trip for a while, noting all the great food stops along the way.I remember going down my mental checklist  as we rushed to the car and saying in my head that we have our bags, we have our snacks; we should be good to go! We buckle our belts and we are off making our way towards  I-85.

After about an hour, I asked my brother to hand me the map in the glove compartment.I hear him searching around for it. A moment of silence passed and I see the look on his face. The map was not there. Being ex-Army and the confident man that I am, I knew that all I had to do was trust my gut and find a gas station. There must be a gas station up ahead. Lady luck wasn’t on my side that day.All it took was that one wrong turn and I found myself for an hour with no gas station in sight. I let out a cry of frustration and after about 10 more miles of aimless driving, I finally I spot civilization.

As the cashier handed me the map, I felt such a huge weight off my shoulders.I throw my brother the map as I walk by his window.

He opens the map. We both laughed. This couldn’t get any better. The map was HUGE. It covered the entire dashboard like a green blanket.Of course he had also opened it upside down so we had to flip it around just to figure out where we were and how to get to our destination.Thirty minutes of bickering about which route to take to Panama City Beach had passed and this inconveniently sized piece of paper eventually got us back on track.

Being able to read the map saved the day back in 1991, but I definitely would not have found myself in that situation today with GPS, maybe a little bit with Map Quest though. It’s amazing how much things have changed in terms of figuring out how to get to where we need to go.

Do you guys have a similar experience with maps? How about an experience where GPS wasn’t helpful?
