An Old Tech Tale: King of School Aromas

Old Tech Tales are the stories we share with this generation about products and services that has completely changed or become obsolete due to the advancement of technology. We’ve learned that overtime, keeping our technology and software current and up-to-date is necessary to remain competitive in this application economy. However while we often look ahead at the upcoming trends in technology, rarely do we joyfully reminisce about the past. Join me and the Customer Lifecycle Solutions group in sharing some of our favorite, funny, and almost embarrassing experiences with old technology. The latest tale in this series is from Carol Piccus, Sr Solutions Architect - CLS.

“ Ah the smell of the fresh ditto, do you remember?  The cool paper and purple print? There was just something about getting a fresh ditto to work on – whether it was just an assignment or a test (even though it was often hard to write on right away). Of course, that smell was probably toxic and the print was not always clear. Yet, I remember getting that privileged opportunity to take the master down to the office to make copies. How important I felt walking down to the school office! I never did get the honor of actually running the machine, (see this video to bring back memories:  https://youtu.be/o0HUx2iDv2U) but I do remember the mesmerizing sight and sound of the ditto machine running. Of course, if anything happened to the ditto master, you would likely not get that honor again. Those masters were special because they were so hard to recreate. There wasn’t the luxury of spell check or automatic formatting.

Printing has evolved so much since those days. Today, our “master” documents are now mostly electronic and can be sent via network or internet to reach the printing destination – complete with printing instructions. In some cases, the printing has been bypassed completely in such situations as online tests (sorry, no sniffing toxic fumes before that test - https://youtu.be/Uu3iCvAQCHg.)  And did you ever imagine those paper print outs being replaced by 3D printed items?  So maybe we will start looking forward to sniffing 3D printed food instead.”
