An Old Tech Tale: Coins for the meter

By Haylee_Thikeo posted Sep 17, 2015 10:43 AM

Old Tech Tales are the stories we share with this generation about products and services that has completely changed or become obsolete due to the advancement of technology. We’ve learned that overtime, keeping our technology and software current and up-to-date is necessary to remain competitive in this application economy. However while we often look ahead at the upcoming trends in technology, rarely do we joyfully reminisce about the past. Join me and the Customer Lifecycle Solutions group in sharing some of our favorite, funny, and almost embarrassing experiences with old technology. The latest tale in this series is from Mike Weightman, Sr. Principal Business Analyst – Lifecycle Management

Driving into the city from the burbs for my friend’s birthday at a family-style Italian restaurant.  Of course there isn’t any parking available on a Friday night in the summer so I begin exploring the nearby neighborhood.  Each gap between cars temporarily raises my hope before I see the fire hydrant or cross walk mocking me, forcing me to continue the search.  After the third lap I see a car pulling out and successfully claim my new spot a few blocks from the restaurant.  Victory!

Time has already expired on the meter.  I put $0.50 in to cover the first hour but know we’ll be out late and need more.  No money in the center console or the glove compartment or under the seat.  I really need to clean my car.  Walking towards the restaurant I find a convenience store and break my $20 buying a pack of gum.  Go back to feed the meter and then head to the restaurant where I spot my friends.  Happy Birthday James, I got you this pack of gum.

How we make payments today has dramatically changed over the years.  When was the last time you paid a parking meter or entered the tolls with coins? When was the last time you wrote a check?  Deposited your check at an ATM or spoke to someone at the bank?  It seems like more and more of our payments are becoming mobile and application based. Don’t have money for the parking meter? There’s an app for that!
