Transcript Office Hours: CA Workload Automation Autosys Edition (AE) (Aug 13)

Aug 13, 2015 11:00 AM

Lenn Thompson - CA :               Good morning and thank you for joining office hours this morning. What questions do you have for our AE experts today?

Lenn Thompson - CA :     Quick housekeeping item: today's session will only be 45 minutes. We'll wrap up around 10:45 today.

Jim Spath :           G'day.

Lenn Thompson - CA :     @Jim Good morning. Have any quesitons for the gang today?

Jim Spath :           Of course. ;-)

Chris Kent :          Hello - We are preparing to migrate  11.3 SP1 to 11.3.6. Using the migration assistance, I have two questions - 1) How long does an instance take to migrate (of about 2k jobs) and does the originating environment need to be offline for the migration assistant to work?

Lenn Thompson - CA :     @Jim We'd expect nothing less

Michael Woods :              @Chris - Hi, the upgrade  11.3 to 11.3.6 can be don in place.  No need to use the Migration Assistant.

Chris Kent :

@Michael - We are actually going to stand up a new environment to take advantage of "beefing" up our systems, so we would need to use the Migration assistant wouldn't we?

Jim Spath :

We have been trying to tweak the SCHED_SCALE parameter for scalability.  So far, I'm up to 20 and not seeing any difference on my test suite. The original complaint was "jobs take up to N seconds to start."  What are valid values for this parameter on Windows.

Jim Spath :

@Chris - we upgraded  11.3 to 11.3.6 "in place" but moved the EP  AIX to Windows.

Edwin :

Is there any # to dial in?

Jim Spath :

In my checks, we have certain times of the day (like 06:00) where around 250 jobs start simultaneously. It takes a few seconds for the EP to go through all of the events.

Michael Woods :

@Chris - The assistant does not work with a 11.3 database.  What you could do is just copy the database over to the new environment.

Jim Spath :

@Edwin - text only, no audio.

Chris Kent :

@Michael - Good to know

Lenn Thompson - CA :

@Edwin Office Hours are done via this online chat. Just ask your question and the team will answer!

Chris Kent :

@Micheal - Excuse my ignoracne, but with all the schema changes to the database, wouldn't a copy not work properly?  At a high level, what would be done to accomodate that?

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Jim The SCHED_SCALE values are the same on Windows. Have you increased DB_CONNECTIONS also?

Jim Spath :

@chris I think I would stop the system, copy the database, then upgrade.

Michael Woods :

@Chris: The database would need to be updated during the process

Jim Spath :

@Mark - yes.

Justin Hubbard :

@Jim The valid values for SCHED_SCALE are 1-64. Their is documentation for tuning this paramter on windows in the Workload AUtomation AE & Workload Control Center Wiki at wiki.ca.com

karthick :

How to find version of ca7? do we have any cmd ?

Jim Spath :

@Justin - not enough documentation for me, sorry.

Chris Kent :

@Michael/Jim - Thanks for the clarification

Jim Spath :

(This is WAAE, not CA7 chat)

karthick :

i'm sorry

Lenn Thompson - CA :

@Karthick This month's session is focused on AE. We will be focusing on CA 7 next month!

Bendu :

@Everyone  - I'd like CA to do a webinar to give an overview of the AutoSys hardware & software architectures - network and application layers - how they 'talk' to each other; HA env and Non-HA

Michael Woods :

@Karthick:  There is a message in the CA 7 startup that gives you the version.

Edwin :

when a file trigger is running with continous mode, for UPDATE, how to make the dependent job to run as soon as the file is updated?

Michael Woods :

@Karthick:  It is also on the logon screen

Lenn Thompson - CA :

Thanks for joining us today, everyone. If you have questions for the team, please ask them here in the chat window!

karthick :

yes, i din't notice

Lenn Thompson - CA :

REMINDER: We have to cut this morning's session short. We'll be wrapping up at 10:45 a.m. ET

Jim Spath :

Back to my scalability question, what are reasonable times for 200 or 300 jobs to start, with modern hardware - 1 second, 10 seconds, 0.1 seconds?

Michael Woods :

@Bendu:  We are planning on doing some webinars laster this year.  That would be a good topic and I will suggest it.

Bendu :

@Michael - Thx! Looking forward to it!

Jim Spath :

(This wiki page just says one can set the parameters, nothing about expected results - https://wiki.ca.com/display/AE1136SP2p/Tuning%20CA%20Workload%20Automation%20AE )

Jim Spath :

(It implies higher values give better results but so far I don't see anything positive)

Jim Spath :

On a completely different note, what are the dependencies between AutoSys agent version and the csampmux process? Can I run a newer agent with an older csampmux?

Bendu :

@Everyone - Can U confirm that (post R11.3.6), all newer versions  of R11.3x are in-place upgrades? The clients too?

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Jim We will need to check to see if we have any benchmarks on that. I'll check into it and reach out to you offline.

Jim Spath :

Thanks @Mark - this doc is  2008, it appears - http://search.ca.com/assets/SiteAssets/TEC443677_External/TEC443677.pdf - it simply shows SCHED_SCALE set to 64. But it compares r11 to 4.5 and 4.0...

Mark Warren :

@Brendu - Yes all Upgrades, Service Packs and Releases are in place. Moving forward our direction / requirements are to have inplace only.

Jim Spath :

Any updates on the Idea duplication merges?  Last time I looked, one that I flagged was unchanged.

Jim Spath :

(it was about customizing email notifications)

Bendu :

@Mark - Thx

Jim Spath :

@MarkWarren - what about OS and DB changes?  I like Oracle fine, but if the company said go to SQLServer I would not have a choice.

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Jim Yes, agents can run with older versions of CSAM within reason. What I mean by that is, I doubt any significant testing has taken place with much older versions of CSAM. It is recommended to keep CSAM up to date which should occur with agent or client upgrades.

Mark Warren :

@Jim, Not sure what your asking but in AutoSys it is a config change. Now if your asking for a routine to move data  one to the other?

Jim Spath :

Thanks @MarkHanson.  I ended up with "broken" agent upgrades and will repair the process here.  Just wondered what the risks were in the meantime.

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Jim Also re: agents and CSAM... the 11.3+ agents utilize CSAM much less than 11.0 agents. Only in certain situations (e.g. blobs/globs)

Jim Spath :

@MarkWarren - I don't need this now, but I recall chat about database migration tool.  It's a nice to have, certainly easier and more flexible than JIL dump and reload.

Mark Warren :

@Jim, Thanks for the clarification, yes we need to work on this, but not on current release plan.

Bendu :

We have a lot of global vars that are outdated/unused - dated years ago. I understand that global vars can be embedded in scripts and are therefore difficult to determine what's being used/not. But, I'd like a clean environment.  Are U folks looking into alternatives for global vars so that we have the ability to clean up unused ones without harming an application's job streams?

Jim Spath :

@Bendu - what is the harm in unused variables?

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Jim - if you are having chronic issues with agent upgrades let's discuss offline

Bendu :

@Jim - eyesore; garbage

Jim Spath :

(we have them too)

sathish :

@thompson we are not able to kill the long running sql job through KILL event. It needs DBA's help to kill the session. Are we missing some thing

Sridhar Baratam :

@Satish - How are you running the SQL job? Is that using a SQL jobtype or a command script?

Jim Spath :

@Satish which agent version? We have seen this with SAP jobs also.

Jim Spath :

(auto_r3 - old SAP adapter, not the newer plugin)

Dave :

When running a job on AIX, the environment variable LIBPATH gets set. Anyone know where this is variable is set?

Jim Spath :

@MarkH - re agent upgrades, not a chronic problem, more of a change control and management cluster.  I am partway through moving  11.3 agents to 11.3.6 build 700 hundred something.

sathish :

@Jim 437 Windows_NT ANY 11.3.6 SP1 0

sathish :

@sridhar it is using SQL JOB TYPE

Michael Woods :

@Dave:  What version of the agent?

Jim Spath :

@Dave - on my AIX systems one place is /etc/auto.profile.

Dave :

build 738

Dave :

/etc/auto.profile on the Scheduler or Agent?

Jim Spath :

@Dave agent.

Michael Woods :

@Dave: So that is the System Agent 11.3.  So that could be set in the auto.profile as Jim stated, but could also come  the different profiles that the agent could source, depending on the settings.  The job profile, owner (if configured),

Lenn Thompson - CA :

We have a couple minutes left in today's session (we need to end at 10:45 this month). Any last questions?

Dave :

Nothing in auto.profile, and job has no explicity 'profile' setting. Any other ideas?

Jim Spath :

Yes, but they are all case related.  ha ha.

Mark Hanson (CA) :

@Dave also /etc/profile.CA via /etc/profile is another possible source of LIBPATH change

Dave :

Is there a master list of all profiles that get sourced? as in 1. auto.profile 2. profile.CA

Jim Spath :

Thanks all.  Cya.

Sridhar Baratam :

@Satish I will contact you and we can discuss further

Michael Woods :

@Dave: can you give me your contact info and I'll get you the list.  We are running out of time

Lenn Thompson - CA :

Thanks for joining us today, We'll get the transcript up on the site this afternoon. Have a great day!
