CA Endevor

[TRANSCRIPT] askCA: CA Endevor & CA ALC (Jan. 9, 2018)

Jan 11, 2018 10:47 AM

Lenn Thompson (CA): Good morning, everyone! We're going to get started here in a minute.

Lenn Thompson (CA): Please remember that if you're talking to someone specific, please use @NAME -- so if you're commenting on something I'm saying, you'd say @Lenn

Stuart Ashby: Is there still weather in Framingham?

Lenn Thompson (CA): @Everyone: Alright, let's get started. We've assembled a great group of Endevor and ALC experts here today. What questions do you have for them?

John Greenley: My biggest question in on timing, and this may not even be the appropriate forum but...  When should we anticipate the release of Endevor v19?

Stuart Ashby: @Everyone Would you say that PTF RO99458 Remove SAS/C from Endevor is a HIPER as it requires the conversion of the CONLIB to PDS/e?

Rose Sakach (CA): @Everyone... bright and sunny in Framingham  :-)  But it won't last long... rain is scheduled for the weekend

Rose Sakach (CA): @John - are you a member of the Endevor Validation program?  That is a forum where we can give guidance on anticipated release delivery.  At this point, we are probably more than 6 - months out...

Patricia Caudill: Does Endevor R17 have an end support date?

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA): @John Sorry, message went to prvate Chat. Copying to everyone. We are still planning to release Endevor v18 GA Complete in the mid 2018 timeframe

Phil Gineo: I saw a post in the mainframe devops community on CA Endevor Software Manager Plus.  It now includes External Security Interface, Librarian Interface & Panvalet Interface.  Should Eclipse Plugin into Endevor be listed too?

Rose Sakach (CA): @Stuart... hoping our L1 folks can help answer that HIPER question

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @Patricia - R17 end of support date will be announced with the release of the full GA version of R18

June Abdercrombie (CA): @Stuart - RO99458 is not really a Hyper because it is not correcting a critical problem in Endevor.  It is more of an internal conversion of Endevor to remove the SAS/C from Endevor programs.   Yes, it does require a conversion of the ASIQLOAD and CSIQLOAD libraries to PDSE

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @Phil - the Eclipse plugin for Endevor is now part of the base product and included with all versions (as is ESI)

Stuart Ashby: @June, for me it wasn't a big issue but for some organisations the HOLDDATA on this PTF could be a shock because of the conversion effort.

Rose Sakach (CA): @John - so to be clear, we won't be releasing the "base" incremental for V19 until we announce V18 "Complete"; hope this makes sense.

Joe Ploeger: Anyone using CSM to install Endevor v18 should already have PDSE loadlib's.. just saying. PDSE's don't bite

Phil Gineo: Is the product name for Endevor now "CA ENDEVOR SOFTWARE MANAGER PLUS"?

Patricia Caudill: Do you have a list or sequence of steps to implement package processing in an environment that has never used packaging as part of their implementation process?

June Abdercrombie (CA): @Stuart - so you believe that because of the extent of the conversion in the Holddata it should be a flagged as a Hyper?

Xavier: Hi. does support for java 8 planned?

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA): @Phil The official product name is "CA Endevor Software Change Manager". CA Endevor SCM Plus is one of the options.

Phil Gineo: @Vaughn Would be good to include the information on the plugin in the CA ENDEVOR SOFTWARE MANGER PLUS post put out earlier today

Stuart Ashby: @June, I use CSM for applying maint and when there are a lot of fixes the HOLDDATA can be lengthy to read. If you miss this particular HOLDDATA, the SMP/e apply gives an RC4 but the rest of the message isn't that clear that a PDS/e conversion was required.

June Abdercrombie (CA):  @Patricia - are you looking to start using just the base Package processing or are you looking for Package Ship?

John Greenley:  Sorry.  My WebEx died.  I'm back, thank you for the answer!

Rose Sakach (CA): @John, that was a quick recovery from "death"  :-)

June Abdercrombie (CA): @Stuart - good point.  I don't know what it would take to get the Hyper flagged turned on.  I can check

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA): @xavier Could you please give us some more details? Do you mean java 8 in Tomcat server or do you mean storing java 8 sources? or some other use case?

Xavier: yes for tomcat server supplied in CSS. used with eclipse plugin

Patricia Caudill: My initial question was to implement base packaging, but we are also looking at package ship for other instances we support that are using packaging now.  So info on both would help.

Richard Rozentals (CA): @Patricia I found a section on setting up Packages this is the link to the v18 manual:  https://docops.ca.com/ca-endevor-SCM/18-0/en/administrating/it-audit-guidelines/package-facility-for-it-audit#PackageFacilityforITAudit-Configuration

Joe Ploeger: @xavier @ekaterina I'm currently in process of installing Endevor web UI using java 8_64. Are you saying I cannot?

Xavier: @joe for the moment only java 7 is supported as far as i know

Stuart Ashby: @Joe/@Xavier, I am trying to find the PTF I just applied to Common Services to use Java 8 for the Eclipse UI

Richard Rozentals (CA): @Patricia As for package ship this is more complex to activate. Do you have package ship active for other instances? As this would avoid setting up the skels.

Patricia Caudill: Thank you for the package link - we are still on R17 but a quick look this is very helpful.    We do not have shipping set up anywhere right now.

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA): @xavier I've checked with other teams, we should be fine with Java 8.

Xavier:  ok thanks

Richard Rozentals (CA): @Patricia this is the link to the package ship doc:   https://docops.ca.com/ca-endevor-scm/17-0/en/administrating/package-administration/package-ship-facility/how-to-set-up-package-ship/

Patricia Caudill: Thank you!

Xiaopu Chen (CA): 31 bit Java 8 is supported by Endevor Web Services, but not Tomcat 8.

Lenn Thompson (CA): @Everyone: Thanks for all of your great questions (and answers, CA team!) What other questions do you have for our group of experts?

Joe Ploeger: @Xiaopu good info

Xavier: unfortunately i had to leave. thank you for this chat, it's a great idea.

Lenn Thompson (CA): @Xavier: You're very welcome. Thanks for joining us!

Xavier:  thanks to CA

Phil Gineo: Thanks everyone!

John Greenley: Two questions.

John Greenley: Historically, End of Support has been set for 12 months from the announcement.  Do you anticipate this will be tru for v17?

June Abdercrombie (CA): @Everyone - found this link to a KB article on Endevor and Java 8 -

June Abdercrombie (CA): https://support.ca.com/us/knowledge-base-articles.TEC1250912.html

John Greenley:  Also, could you direct me to additional information on the Endevor Validation Program?

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @John - yes, that is correct

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @John - you can find the info and link to join at https://validate.ca.com/welcome/

Stuart Ashby: @Vaughn, based on the ISPF changes that V18 has, do you think that one year is enough time

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @Stuart - we've had that feedback from other customers, and are considering a longer period but haven't made it concrete yet

Stuart Ashby: @Vaughn, if it gets made concrete then i am sure it will be good news for some companies

Vaughn Marshall (CA): @Stuart - absolutely - thanks for the input

Stuart Ashby: @Everyone, is there any mileage in the suggestion of an ISPF option to use classic or longname under ISPF?

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA): @Stuart Yes, we are already working on this this quarter :)

John Greenley: We're still on v17.  CAn anyone point me to a discussion on what the "ISPF Changed in V18" are?

Stuart Ashby: @Ekaterina, that is fab news as it reduces the conversion work

John Greenley: "Changes" - not "Changed"

Stuart Ashby: @Everyone, i have to go but I just wanted to say that this was very useful from my perspective. Thank you.

Emlyn Williams: @Ekaterina, are you able to share the enhancements that are being worked on?

Lenn Thompson (CA): Thanks for joining us! See you in the community!

June Abdercrombie (CA): @John - You can check the Release notes on the Endevor V18 DocOps site - June Abdercrombie (CA):

https://docops.ca.com/ca-endevor-SCM/18-0/en/ca-endevor-scm-release-notes

Lenn Thompson (CA): @Everyone: We're almost at the top of the hour, so THANK YOU for an incredible first askCA session for this community. We hope you found it valuable and that we'll see you next month! (and in the community, of course)

John Greenley: Thank you!

Ekaterina Tumanova (CA):  Thanks everyone for joining! Happy new New Year!

Patricia Caudill: Great session - Thank you!
