There should by a way to synchronize the SNMP credentials (incl. v3) from Spectrum to Performance Management.
Thanks for posting this idea. Sounds like a great idea.
Can you help me in further clarifying on how this will be helpful and what business problem will this solve?
Also you would want Spectrum as source of truth for SNMP credentials or would it be other way round?
Thanks in advance.
Since most cusotmer are starting (historically) from Spectrum, it would be good to use the Spectrum information and import those into PM. Creating a profile for every single SNMP-community is a lot of effort and using the Spectrum community-strings for the synched devices will save a lot of administration time.
Great Idea but this should be optional. We sometimes use different Communities for Spectrum and PM.
Excellent idea Joerg. I remember in the past we had "false alarms" raised by Spectrum because CAPC was polling the device in question until the correct credentials were used by CAPC.
This is indeed a great idea, but give us the flexibility to maintain different community string in PM and Spectrum.
A couple questions about this idea:
Assuming we could provide an option to automatically create SNMP Profiles in PC from the SNMP credentials of synced Spectrum devices, how would folks want to see these profiles applied?
1) Would it be sufficient/desired for admins to leverage them manually at their discretion?
Once the profiles were automatically created admins could:
2) Or are folks looking for us to take this a step further to see if we can automatically force synced devices in the DA to use an SNMP Profile with the same credentials as its correspond Spectrum device model?
Good idea, although the option should be there to enable/disable this as mentioned by jan and welge.
as far as we understand, it is possible right now to have devices that are modeled in Spectrum already being synched (added) to PM. Unfortunately we didn't find any documentation about how PM decides which existing SNMP profile to use. Therefore we conclude it's just trying all existing snmp profiles. Is that assumption correct?
If so, this is design flaw, since unnecessary polls are executed (possibly even involving security concerns). To remediate this design flaw, picking up dedicated snmp profiles when adding devices would be needed.
Looking at a usecase to sync devices but use different snmp credentials (see posting from Jan above), there would be a need to have a configuration possibility to assign snmp credentials to devices/ranges independently of sync and discovery. I've got no good idea were to place this spontaneously.
Finally, synchronization normally includes removal, which is not existing as of now, or did I miss something?
Good idea. I would find it good, if the SNMP profiles from Spectrum for the corresponding device also in CA PM is used. Means, device "A" in Spectrum use the SNMP profile "Profile_X" and after the sync - CAPM use also "Profile_X" for the same device – no other. Optional option: "use also other SNMP profiles".
Thus, it does not fail to authenticate.
Is it really going on here? This is a very important feature for all Spectrum customers with more than one SNMP community.Nagesh_Jaiswal #Spectrum #PM
