  • 1.  Difference between NPC and CAPC

    Posted Aug 18, 2015 04:07 AM

    Hi Team,

I am looking forward a business case to upgrade the CA NPC to CAPC.

currently We have CA NetQos setup (RA 9.0, NV 7.0, NPC 6.0) and now we want to upgrade it to CAPC 2.5

So could you please share the difference ( like new features , enhancement and other stuff) which comes under the CAPC as we have to mention it in business case.

Also if possible please share the plan for how can we migrate existing CA Netqos setup step by step to CAPC.

    Thanks in Advance !!!

    Regards

    Umesh

There is no upgrade from NPC to CAPC.

PM Performance Management has two components CAPC & DA Data Aggregator.

CAPC is not a product on its own and only a component of PM.

DA is the SNMP data collector portion of PM.

For a list of devices and metric PM supports by default see this web page:

    Data Aggregator Certification Portal

    documentation is here:

CA Performance Management - Source Home - CA Performance Management - 2.5.0 - CA Wiki

UIM Unified Infrastructure Management (formerly Nimsoft) is the other option for a NV replacement.

It has Probes for SNMP and many other types of data collection.

    documentation is here:

    https://wiki.ca.com/display/UIM83/CA+Unified+Infrastructure+Management+-+8.31

Neither PM or UIM have a provision for importing NV data. It will be necessary to evaluate what types of data NV is collecting and what customization you have for alarms, notifications, groups, reports and views, and then compare that to what the other products have by default and what will have to be added.

Once you are ready to cut over to the new product NV will need to be left setup to keep the historical data available. For that see this Tech Tip.

Tech Tip - Setting up NV for historical data only

    https://communities.ca.com/docs/DOC-231149130

RA 9.0 is way past EOL and will work only with NPC. It has morphed into NFA Network Flow Analysis. The later revisions have functionality added so it can be used independently or integrated with UIM.

It is also worth mentioning that CAPC is RedHat Linux only as opposed to NPC which was Windows only.

Good point. The PM product is all Linux only and will require at least four systems.

CAPC - reporting and administrative front end

DA - data aggregator which is connection between CAPC and DR

    DR - the database repository

DC - data collector which does the polling
