Spectrum's Future

    Hello Community,

I have been hearing that Spectrum will be replaced by UIM completely in the future and will be going away in the next 3-5 years. Is that really true? If yes, does anyone has a better idea about the timing.

I have worked with Spectrum from last few years and it is such a massive product that it's hard for me to believe that if it will be replaced. I know that Spectrum was just made 64-bit in version 10.0 and will be releasing 10.1 in the coming months with new features. So, I thought there would be a lot of R&D still happening for Spectrum. Can someone please provide some details around Spectrum's roadmap and strategy for the next few years?

    Thank you,

    Hi ankur11,

I have dropped you an email and we can talk more on this. We also keep community members updated on what we are doing with Spectrum. Here is the link to last webcast: Webcast Recap - Making Spectrum Easy to Use

    Thanks,

I'm interested in hearing what you have to say about this as well.

2 weeks ago, Kathy.Hickey said at the DACHSUG meeting, that Spectrum will be further developed and should not be replaced by UIM.

    Hello Folks,

Frank is correct - you will hear more at CAW too.

Ankur - I dropped a separate email to you with the details. Let me elaborate on that on this forum too..

The information you got is absolutely INCORRECT & WRONG.

This forum know the best that 64bit support for Spectrum was a multi million dollar project - we wouldn't have embarked on that, if Spectrum was going to go away in a few years.

We are just starting to think about how can we get Spectrum capabilities to UIM and the way we are doing it is with a Spectrum-UIM bidirectional integration.  There is no plan to replace Spectrum functionality in UIM!

Additionally the upcoming releases we have things like SDN support in Spectrum, Spectrum web client, support for WLCs & APs, supporting VDCs, dynamic VPN, integration with NFA and the list just goes on and on.

We have said this in the past and we will continue to hit that message again and again, you should not be worried about your Spectrum investment at all.

In teh coming weeks, you will see through another webcast, some of the neat things we are doing for technologies that we expect to get mainstream soon and how we are raising the bar for Spectrum.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly and will be happy to have a chat - in the meanwhile, enjoy the week...

I hope that making NCM easier to use is also on the drawing table for Spectrum.  It needs an over-haul

    Hi Kiran,

That was the impression we got the last time we spoke with Ken & Kathy as well. However, this seemed only a recent development to us, a couple of months ago it was clear to us that UIM would replace spectrum all together.

The only reason why the focus now lays to tighter integration is the sudden insight that the spectrum functionality is not easily ported to UIM.

In short: as I see it, for now the focus lies on integrating Spectrum with UIM and not replacing Spectrum by UIM. But this might change in the future :-)

I highly doubt that. UIM simply cannot provide the same level of intelligence as SPECTRUM has for the auto-discovery and connection mapping process. Even if they move the intelligence to UIM, it will not scale to the 64bit version of SPECTRUM that we have now. I would not worry for it being removed from the product list any time soon.

    Hi Mark,

Nope, you can be assured that nothing has changed recently - you can consider my response authoritative for this

As you guys know more that many others, and as mentioned by Catalin - there is nothing in UIM currently to what Spectrum does at - even at the a basic level. The integration - bidirectional between UIM and Spectrum - was a conscious decision based on this - to be able to let UIM customers experience RCA and Fault Isolation capabilities. Spectrum will in turn benefit as well, by getting access to non-network information more than ever.

I think this is a case of over thinking People going to CA World, please attend the key session - I am doing roadmaps and a lot a hands on sessions too. Also the BU level strategy sessions will give insight and alleviate any doubts remaining.

Post CAW - as i mentioned earlier, I will be doing a webcast to talk about new features and other things as well

Is there somewhere where the longer term, higher level IM plans are laid out?  Which tools are staying, which tools are going, which direction each tool is going in?

    Hello Team,

I am going to shamelessly advertise the Spectrum NPS survey on a couple of posts, please bear with me.

Please use the below post that has the link to the survey..

    New Spectrum NPS Survey

Please note this is the survey that we are an org take very seriously and goes upto our CEO - so your direction will help us ensure our management understands that we listen to you (and hopefully that would translate into apt funding to do more good stuff!).

As I promised in the post, I will reach out to a sample of folks (I already did to a couple thanking them for their kind words as well as some actionable critique they had for us). Folks at CA World who were at our sessions, please put in your comments as you know where we are heading more than many others

    Regards,
