I realize that in this company of legacy system dinosaurs, i am the worst, change-resistant dinosaur, but the new apar download does not seem like an improvement to me. . . . 8^( . . .

    honestly, the sap gui interface is so awkward and the procedure hardly seems straightforward anymore . . . .

    What I do as do I'm sure some others is FTP directly from the mainframe to CA's FTP server for fixes.  I can't do anything with a MF fix on my workstation and then would have to FTP again to the MF, so I just go from the mainframe.  Once you have a job setup with the FTP path you can just adjust the fix number.  I've been using the same approach since R17 when they went from zaps to object PTFs.  Prior to that I used to cut and paste which worked OK.  YMMV but it works for me.
