Why are some items in UMP's USM grayed out?

So what do the grayed out items mean in the UMP's USM?

I am trying to have just 1 instance of the same machine represented in the UMP but that's close to impossible to achieve.

I'm trying to have a group with all my tunnel server hubs in one group yet there are multiple instances and some are solid in color and others are grayed out. In the list view there's a column called Removed and it says yes? What controls this column and determines it status?

    TIA...

I guess this is being caused by vmware probe, are these servers being monitored by the vmware probe too ?

btw, if the above is yes, check the Detached Configuration folder in the vmware probe

Both. They have robots on them and the vmware probe also see's their VM instance in VCenter. But still doesn't give me the reason. Anyone from CA who can give a definitive answer why?

I have seen this happening in our environment and one of the reason I could find is that the Removed field is set to true when the a specific probe like the vmware probe monitoring this VM reports that the VM is removed from the configuration. It could be that the VM was being associated with one ESX server and later moved to another ESX server or the VM was removed from the vmware probe configuration.

When the above happens it doesn't automatically remove the VM but it just updates the Removed field to Yes. Multiple entries might be created if the reconciliation between the entries created by vmware probe and the robot does not happen properly

This is what I observed and there could be other reasons too, so I will leave this for someone from CA to comment on

Bumping.. Can someone from CA answer this definitively? Also how do you correct this? It looks bad when this is grayed out and it was not moved from a host so just want to know how to correct this, avoid it from happening, etc...

What's the answer from CA on this?

Hello, can I get an answer to this? I have a demo that I have to show a group of newly added machines that we created customized monitoring for and of course half of them are all grayed out? I need to fix this and understand why this happens.

Going to have to open a case now...

@Daniel, the 'removed column' contains data that is derived from the vmware probe. When a VM machine that existed and was discovered at one time is deleted from the Vmware infrastructure, i.e. the ESX inventory, it is flagged as removed in USM.

    Thank you Marco.

So I know for a fact these boxes are not removed. They are still up and running and we are monitoring them.

How do I un-mark them so they don't appear grayed out?

    Hi Daniel,

I went through this process just today. What I found was that there was multiple VMs with the same name. We had a major exercise a couple of weeks ago where we moved around a bunch of VMs as well as stood up replicas. To make a long story short we had x3 of our normal amount of VMs and UIM caught them all. Once we consolidated everything back to normal I found that data was fractured across multiple VMs even though only one VM was running. One VM would be grayed out but still show metrics. Another VM with the same name would not be grayed out but would show it was powered down but still show active metrics. Another VM with the same name would be Powered on but only have a couple of metrics. To get the performance metrics to sync back to a single VM I did the following:

The first thing I did was turn off the vmware probe. I then proceeded to NULL out the ci_metric_id in s_qos_data where probe = 'vmware'. After I did that I cleaned out the NIS cached for that particular HUB that is collecting those metrics. Finally bounced data_engine/discovery_server and then started the vmware probe. After about 30 minutes I checked the DB and found that the ci_metric_id column had repopulated. I then checked USM and saw that performance metrics was assigned to a single VM even if there were multiple VMs with the same name. For any device that was grayed out I would delete them from the inventory using the inventory's delete function.

That seemed to have fixed my issue.

So I have to create an IDEA for this to be fixed. There is no way to disable this option w/in the VMware probe.

I'm creating an IDEA and plz upvote this to get this fixed.

Idea:  Add toggle ability to UMP's > USM's to display devices as grayed out when "Remove" = true
