Hello Issac!
For the SQL Availability Group (AlwaysOn) supported as backend database, there's no official announcement yet
Based on this Idea/Thread you will have this comments:
Support for INSTALLING UIM onto SQL Availability Groups (AlwaysOn) and clear docs to that effect
For what it's worth, I know of a couple of larger customers who are successfully using AlwaysOn without any major issues.
From the UIM Support perspective, we pretty much don't care what's on the other end of a database connection - we have many customers in the past who have used SQL Clustering (the predecessor to AlwaysOn) and it works fine. Essentially, as long as there is a valid copy of the SQL database with a supported version of SQL waiting on the other end of whatever hostname or IP that data_engine tries to connect to (and other probes, by way of data_engine's connection string) then we don't really need to be concerned with whether there is AlwaysOn, clustering, mirroring, or anything else - we leave the details of managing the database to the customer's DBAs, and as long as we can connect to the DB and query it, we're happy.
The only "missing piece" as far as I am concerned is QA -- I am not sure whether we have done any official QA testing with an AlwaysOn environment so that we can say it is "certified" but as far as we in Support are concerned, AlwaysOn is supported, and customers are welcome to use it. (As mentioned I know of a few who already do, and are quite happy with it.) So, I'm voting up this idea, because I would like to see us close that final gap and add this to the list of things we have officially tested and can say with certainty that we fully support.
FYI... SQL 2012 Always On (cluster) has been tested by QA (I made a special request for this testing early this year on behalf of a customer) and is "officially" supported. As of May, some initial testing had been done with SQL 2014 Always On ( again on behalf of my customer). The results then indicated no differences noted from the 2012 tests.
