New idea: Don't trash the AWI config on update

Ulrich Clarke The Fourth had big plans on that fateful night. Alas, none of it was meant to be ...

As an admin for UC4, he just wanted to install a quick hotfix for AWI before heading out of the office. The second he clicked "undeploy", he realized he didn't secure the config folder. Believing this to be nothing more than a somewhat upsetting annoyance, he proceeded to restore the configuration from some backups. This, however, took about ten minutes of his time. U.C. the Fourth finally grabbed his jacket and headed out of the office to meet up with his wife and seven kids at the homeless shelter, where he sometimes volounteered.

Then he was hit by a bus. Had he left on time, there would have been no bus.

Not trashing the configuration when undeploying webapps saves lifes!

    Vote for externalized configurations.

In all likelyhood not. I doubt there exists an Ulrich Clarke the Fourth.

You may back "his" proposal nevertheless :)

    Exactly!

This is the man who was, in May of 1845, hit by the 24 line from Westmister to Hampstead Heath, right outside of the microchip manufacturer's office where he left work that day.

It was a mixed bag that year ... the US had just annexed the formerly independent state of Texas, Poe published "The Raven", and several AWS configs were wiped.

    ;)

lol, great minds must think alike I guess: that was the other thing I was meaning to write, because I used to go by "Bender" as a nickname on the interwebs for some time. And I had actually also typed out the full name of everyone's lovable, cigar-fueled, only occasionally manical robot friend, which is only known to the true devotees of Futurama.

But then ... GOOD NEWS EVERYONE - the editor trashed my ramblings, and I wrote the above instead.

Thus, I salute you, fellow scholar of the history of Planet Express ...

    Yes indeed!

Bender Bending Rodriguez is the grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-step-twin-son of ulrich-bender-clarke.

during my lunchbreaks I use to study for genealogy....

Obviously you do, and very thoroughly at that, because you even managed to research his twin, Flexo.

p.s. posting in an epic thread :D

We’re running the AWI server in a Cloud Foundry app cloud. I’m curious: How are you runing the AWI server, and how are you deploying the updates?

It's not productive yet, we're still in the evaluation state and will only upgrade the test system at the start of 2018, with the production system to follow in Q1, 2018.

So at present time it's a single instance VMWare server with Oracle Linux (aka RedHat Lite) with Oracle JDK (we recently had to remove OpenJDK because it's not supported). It runs a plain Tomcat (no Apache reverse proxy or somesuch) and is hosted in our company-local data center.

When it goes live, it will in all likelyhood be two separate VMWare instances, and a load balancer, mostly for redundancy. We secure it with SSL, currently self-signed, will get proper certificates later.

As for deployment, I simply use the "/manager" webapp that comes with Tomcat to undeploy and re-deploy. We experimented with ZDU for the engine upgrades, we are still trying to determine whether we like it. I currently think it's "OK".

So as for production, it'll be either that dual VMWare described above, or a Farnsworth 10K, running BendOS and being fuelled by whatever is "left behind" by Nibbler that day. Take your pick ;)

Guess what. Ulrich Bender Clarke (The Fourth) got lucky and married a girl called Catherine Anderson. See how history repeats itself ...
