PSA: Don't even try 12.1 agents on a 10.x engine (updated)

    FWIW:

    10.x agent on 12.1 engine:
not sure if officially supported, but it seems to work.

    12.1 agent on 10.x engine:
    don't even try ...

The agent will try to connect to all of your CP, then die:

    20180122/135044.061 - U02000066 Host information: Host name='suicidal-agent.example.com', IP address='10.0.0.1'
    20180122/135044.255 - U01002409 Message size is exceeded '1596' > '1572', module 'EXSTRTQ2.ip_list'.
    20180122/135044.255 - U02000010 Connection to Server '*SERVER(ID=32749)' terminated.

    You're welcome.

    Hi Carsten_Schmitz_7883

Thanks for your input, but... Only the Automation Engine is backwards compatible with agents. It's not true the other way around.

Not sure if it's documented though, I will see if I can find a related link.

    Best regards,
    Antoine

    Hi Antoine,

Thanks. I actually knew that it's not supported. This was more of an accidental discovery: We have an agent that runs two agent processes from one binary, and we updated the binary to version 12.1 without remembering that it (also) connects to a 10.x. But having done that already (albeit by accident), I thought I'd post the result anyway, since oftentimes there things might just work eventhough they're not supported. In this case, however, it clearly did not work.

So no worries, I'll just go and install an 10.x agent now, no biggie.

    Cheers,
    Carsten

Always and ever, working as designed and never doubted  :p

Ahah it looks like we're stuck in a "deja vu" loop ;)

Regarding our latest incidents only the last two major versions of  agents (12.0.*, 11.2.*)  are supported with engine on v12.1.*.
At the moment we're still on latest v10 with our agents and our engine is on v12.0. No major or minor problems until now but unfortunately it's not supported if you run into any problems.

If Automic claims this, they also have an interresting re-definiton of the term "major version", since the preceding major versions would, by generally accepted convention, be 11 and 10 :)

In these days when we have alternative facts, don't be afraid of alternative major/minor versions......

I thought exactly the same, but here's the statement (unfortunately in German): "*Sie setzen einen V10 Agent ein der sich nicht mehr in Wartung befindet, zusammen mit einer AE der Version V12.0 was natürlich funktioniert aber offiziell nicht empfohlen und unterstütz wird da es sich um mehr als 2 Main Releases Unterschiedh handelt zwischen Agent und Automation Engine Server."
As an addition to that: "

Okay, it was stated as "main" release. But where's the difference between "Major" and "Main"?

(Could someone please do a translation if needed?)

You're using a Version 10 agent, which is not in maintenance anymore, in combination with an AE of version 12.0. While this works (naturally *sic*), it's not officially recommended or supported, since there are more than two major versions between agent and automation engine server. [...] Officially we only support operation, or a difference of component versions, of max. 2 major releases. Meaning, a V10 agent with an AE in version 12 is not supported officially, because there are more than 2 major versions in between (V10, V11.1, V11.2 und V12.0)".

That was fun, eventhough I tried to translate the epic "Bandwurmsatz" in one piece but failed :)
