i just received an email from an IDMS to ???? conversion vendor - the relevant line is:

After CA Technologies first acknowledging there would be no new functionality for CA IDMS and then being bought by Broadband .....

has CA ever made such a declaration that there would be no new functionality for IDMS (and I missed it?) or is this just a vendor blowing smoke up our assembler?

There are several clients testing new functionality now, so no, you did

not miss anything, and yes, it must be a scare tactic!

Hi John,

Sorry to reply to you directly but I knew you would have the answer.

When is Release 20 or whatever the next release is called coming out?   I’ve got a bunch

of 18.5 clients.  Id rather just do Rel 20 the do 19 and then 20 in a few months.

Everybody I talk to dances around the answer, they probably don’t know.

Release 20 of ca-db2 tools has been available for quite a while -= at least a year – I have had r20 in production for 3+ months and non-prod for quite a bit longer – the release has fared quite well in our shop

Chris, I think you are confusing your products. Andrew was talking about IDMS, not CA-db2 tools (though I agree, r20 of that is functioning very well here too). 

Andrew, I'm sure someone from CA will chime in, but my understanding is that there is no immediate plan for a release 20 of IDMS. Instead CA are on a continuous improvement process of release 19.0. Instead of bundling a whole bunch of improvements in a single new release, they are releasing them incrementally as PTFs for release 19.0. If you look at the PTF's for release 19.0, you will see a number of them are not bug fixes, rather they are new features. A recent one was Pass Phrase support. So I would suggest you go to 19.0 when you can as there isn't a 20 around the corner. That being said there is not EOS date on 18.5, so there is no hurry.

Thanks for responding on the question around continuous delivery and IDMS, you have pretty much "hit the nail on the head".

THe CA database product, (CA IDMS and CA Datacom),  have adopted a continuous delivery model which is similar to what IBM has announced for IBM DB2.

In the CA IDMS arena, we are focusing on the continued improvement of Version 19.0.  Our goal is to deliver small to medium enhancements as part of the service stream that are easily consumed and adopted by the Version 19.0 client base.  As Steve noted above, an example would be the recently delivered enhancement to add PassPhrase support.

Customers attending our periodic (quarterly) IDMS roadmaps are able to watch the continued flow of enhancements as they move from Under Consideration (future) to Planned (under construction) to Delivered (available to customers).  One of the enhancements that the IDMS community has been very interested in has been the implementation of MQ Support in IDMS. Customers are participating with our IDMS team as the enhancement has moved from future to planned and into a phase now where they are actively participating with our teams in validation.

While we are in a continuous delivery model with CA IDMS V19.0, we still realize there will be a time when hardware architecture or other external drivers will require us to close out V19.0 and move to the next release of CA IDMS (V20.0).  When that becomes evident, we will communicate openly with our valued CA IDMS customers.
