With CA SYSVIEW for Db2 - 20 IR7, IQL editor is released and now it is available for users.

Before talking about IQL Editor let's remember What IQL is.

What is IQL?

Insight Query Language (IQL) is CA SYSVIEW for DB2's internal language used for changing and creating most batch reports and online panels. By providing IQL solution rather then hard coded panels and reports, CA SYSVIEW for Db2 serves the flexibility to change and create the following items:

  • Layout
Fields and headings can be placed or moved on printed reports and display panels.
  • The records and fields displayed
You can select from the 240+ records and the thousands of fields available among those records.
  • The format of how the information displays
You can assign special attributes (color, intensity, reverse video, blinking, underscoring) to displayed fields. Dates and times can be easily manipulated to accommodate different shop or national standards.
  • How reports are delivered
You can decide to send a report to a printer, to a screen, or to a file for later processing.

What is IQL Editor?

IQL Editor is a stand-alone Insight Query Language (IQL) editing tool for CA SYSVIEW for DB2 for use with Microsoft Windows. As a database administrator, install IQL Editor to edit IQL files, design IQLs, modify IQLs, and create custom IQL reports. IQL Editor supports tabbed editing, which allows working with multiple open files in a single window.

What makes IQL Editor crutial?

Before without IQL editor, when you want to change any  IQL , in order to see the result you had to run the report on system. If the request was running for your data collector, you needed to stop and start the request to see the changes. If the request was not running, the changes were reflected the next time that the request was started.

By IQL editor, when you change the IQL, the output is immediately reflected to screen and you don't need to repeat the process in previous paragraph and have several attempts, untill you get the expected output. (See the capture below)

You can create new IQL files as well!

IQL Editor allows you to create IQL files. To create a file, select FileNew from the main menu. When you add content to the new file, you can use snippets with ready pre-defined code parts. To save a file, select FileSave from the menu. Use the steps from Download and Upload IQL Files to upload the file to the mainframe.

The following capture shows the interface of IQL Editor. Available files are listed on the left. Files APPLIO and APPLPROF are open in tabs. Code editor and IQL Visual Output module show the content of APPLIO, which is the selected file.
