The IUA awarded 5 Hall of Fame (HOF) awards at CA World. The 5 IUA HOF recipients are (in alphabetical order):
Gary Cherlet
Jean-Paul DeFeyter
Cal Domingue
Jim Rice
Dick Weiland

Here is a little synopsis of their contributions to the CA IDMS and/or the IUA:

Gary Cherlet

Gary Cherlet started working with IDMS in 1979 in Canada. In 1981, he moved to Australia working as a DBA, and was hired by Cullinet in 1983. He did pre and post sales support until 1988. He’s been consulting and helping IDMS sites ever since. Gary ran the Adelaide IDMS User Group for several years in 1980s and then 1990s, then started the OzUA in 2001, after attending a CA World. He became the Asia international representative to the IUA Board shortly after that. During his time on the IUA Board, he was editor for IDMS Connections, and was an advocate for the communities’ modernization and gave tirelessly of his time. Gary is a regular presenter at CA Worlds and IUA conferences. Gary left the IUA Board last year, but still continues to be an active participant in the message board, and is always there to offer expert advice and support to the IDMS Community at large.

Jean-Paul DeFeyter

Jean-Paul DeFeyter is a Business Architect for CA. He started his career at Cullinet Belgium in the late 1970s in the Brussels Development team. In the 1980s, he became head of the development team. Jean-Paul has been in charge of the CA IDMS SQL optimizer since release 12.0. Jean-Paul initiated the development of CA IDMS Visual DBA under Release 12.0. And he has enhanced the application to its current version for release 18. Jean-Paul is an appreciated speaker at IDMS user events in Europe.

Cal Domingue

Cal Domingue started working at Cullinet, now CA, in 1985, in level 1 IDMS support. He championed the application development side of the house. Cal is a gifted teacher and a joy to work with. Cal is the GO TO guy for ADS, DML, SQL, SQL table procedures and Quick Bridge product, and much more. Cal was instrumental in the CA Support organization’s effort to improve the quality of IDMS online documentation, particularly knowledge-base articles. Cal is a regular presenter at CA Worlds and IUA conferences. He has many facets, and it is really worth getting to know him.

Jim Rice

Jim Rice first started working with IDMS 30 years ago in 1983 and joined the IUA in 1986. Jim was elected to the IUA board of directors in 1995 and his greatest contributions came when he was elected IUA International Chair in 1998. The IUA made extraordinary progress during Jim’s three years as chair as he implemented the IUA Road Shows, multiple successful conferences, and worked closely with CA to improve CA World content.
When Jim first took the chair position relations with CA were strained. Working tirelessly to improve the relationship Jim was able to bring the CA and IUA relationship into an era of working together for the common good of our members. IUA board work can be difficult and sometimes downright stressful. We could always count on Jim to make our time on the board fun. From wearing Viking horns at our CA World table, to Chariot Races in the hallways of our St Louis hotel, to taking pictures with the “Big Johnson” soccer player at the IUA booth, Jim has always known how to balance fun with serious board work. For Jim’s outstanding contributions to the IUA and the IDMS community he certainly deserves induction into the IUA Hall of Fame.

Dick Weiland

Dick Weiland started working with IDMS in 1977. He joined Cullinet in 1981 as a field support representative, travelling across the country teaching and helping customers. In 1988, he switched to Level 2 support, based in Lisle, Illinois. Over the years, Dick has specialized in ADS and database performance, indexes, and large databases. He has contributed in so many ways to product enhancements, service and support, resolving customer needs or working through issues or problems. On a side note, Dick is a avid Chicago Bears fan, and will not miss a game under any conditions. At one point, he wrote a letter to the Bears’ organization complaining about their poor performance. Not long afterwards, the Bears' president was moved out of his position and replaced, and Dick believes he had something to do about it. Dick, also known as Mr. Index, is a frequent presenter at CA World and IUA conferences, and is always ready to go the extra mile to help the customer.

Please join the IUA in congratulating these 5 individuals!
