Clarity Portlets and Brower issue

I have a portlet that will not run successfully in IE8.

After about 3 mins I get the unhelpful 500 error.

The portlet will run successfully with Firefox(v26) and Chrome(v31). It takes about 3 minutes also, but it returns the data.

I am on Clarity 12.1.1.3.

Has anybody had better success with one browser over another?
Any thoughts on why there would be a difference?
I know almost nothing about browsers.
