Is it better to install the CA SystemEdge Agent and CA Virtual Assurance for Infrastructure Manager (AIM) directly on the Vmware vCenter server or on a separate W2k8r2 server.  If the Sysedge agent and AIM are installed on a separate server does they have access to the datastores?

Yes you must installed sysedge agent and AIM for VMWare on a separate server, and this server have to configured the account and password for VMWare (Vcenter) access. And yes you wil see information for VMWare after be discovered on Spectrum Server for datastores, virtual machines, ESX server.
