Windows & forms-based cascading authentication

Hi,

we have a use case where we want to use cascading authentication in following scenario:
User will first be redirected to the SM Windows authentication scheme (with SM agent on IIS). When authentication fails (user is not present in our AD or a trusted AD), he should be redirected to a forms-based authentication scheme where he should be able to access the application by providing user credentials from another user directory (LDAP, ...).

I already found the following article:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms972958.aspx
This one discusses a custom ASP deployment.

Isn't there a way to let IIS try the windows authentication once and then redirect to the 401 page instead of keeping on sending a popup to the end user to authenticate on AD?

Thanks for your feedback.

Dimitri
