"get storage" using lots of CPU

I changed a DC-COBOL program in the following ways:
1) Data that was passed to and from this program in a work record is now passed in IDMS storage.
2) Some internal data that was kept in working-storage was also moved to IDMS storage.
3) An associated program was also converted to use "get storage" commands.
So the task doing 12 additional "get storage" commands (3 for old storage, 9 for new storage) that it did not do before.
The CPU used by the program has jumped enormously - over 10 times what it used before. Is this to expected when doing "get storage" commands?
