OIDs are object IDs. If one SM policy store object refrences another (a rule in a policy for example) it uses the OID - consider the OID to be the primary key / foreign key relation between objects. Among other things it means that referential integrity between objects is maintained even if the objects textual name is changed. When you export/import objects with smobjexport/import the tool tries to preserve object IDs first and then object names unless there is a clash (-f is used to decide the action on a clash) All that said in r6.0 (I cannot speak for r12 but I think the XPS stuff supercedes all of what I have said) )I know of only one good reason to know an object ID and that is if you want to export the 'global' domain - essentially this domain has no name. Otherwise just use the objects name (-s -e -i -j params) - it is, for the most part, an implementation detail. - Steve
