In this week’s Tuesday tip, we will discuss about the difference between Resource OBS and Staff OBS function which has confused a lot of users.
The Staff OBS field is part of the Staff Member's properties. ( Project > Team > Click Properties Icon for a Team Member). This means the Staff OBS can be different for the same resource across different projects the resource is allocated to. By default, the Staff OBS Unit field is blank, but there is an option to set a default value at the project level for all new resources allocated to the project by following the below steps
Project --> Properties Page --> Schedule subpage --> Default Staff OBS Unit (this is where it’s usually found but can change as per the organization design)
The Resource OBS field is set at the Resource Level as opposed to being at the Project Level. The options on the browse for either of these two fields comes from associating an OBS to the Resource object.
How the Search Filter works for the Resource OBS and Staff OBS and what happens if the Staff OBS is left blank?
Let’s take the example of Resource Workload portlet (under Resource Planning),
If the Staff OBS is left blank, the results will include resources from all Staff OBS's. If a value is passed for the Staff OBS on the filter page, the results will include the resources that meet the remaining filter criteria, however, the ETC, Actuals, Allocations and Total Usage will be displayed only for those resources under the selected Staff OBS in the filter criteria.
In a nutshell,
- If the list is only filtered by the Resource OBS, this changes the number of Resources listed.
- If the list is filtered by the Staff OBS, the number of Resources remains the same, just the values on the TSV fields change.
- If the list is filtered by the Resource OBS AND Staff OBS, the number of resources on the list will be determined by the value on the Resource OBS parameter, the values on the TSV will be determined by the Staff OBS selected.
- Similarly, if the filter parameters are any other parameter and the Staff OBS, the number of resources on the list will be determined by the other parameter, and the Staff OBS parameter will only dictate the values on the TSV for those resources.)
