variable assignment a problem in e2e

I'm trying to write an e2e script that assigns different values to a variable depending on things it finds on the screen.  Here's a snippet of working code:

a=0

...

a=2

...

a=4

...

pause 1 ticks until
text("Normal Processing")
InWindowAnyInstance("PUTTY.EXE|PuTTY|")
PauseFalse
pause 1 ticks until
text("Syncing")
InWindowAnyInstance("PUTTY.EXE|PuTTY|")
'a=1
PauseFalse
'a=4
EndPause

EndPause

If I uncomment out the variable assignment lines, it fails to compile with:

>>C:\Program Files\Nimsoft\e2e_scripting\scripts\script1.src(113:4)

[E] A closing parenthesis is expected.

Why would the first few variable declarations be fine, but the ones in this chunk yield issues?
