We've used traps to push service alarms from Nagios to the corresponding host models in Spectrum. It was pretty simple. We set up a spectrum contact with a service_notification_commands command that sends a trap to the spectrum server. The deciding factor in going this route was the time involved in development. Every other option we considered would have required a lot more development effort, but the trap solution took very little time.
