Upgrade Client Automation 14.0

I'm bit confused with docops upgrade of domain manager,

Upgrade the MDB using the CA Client Automation installation DVD (if appropriate).
If the MDB is installed on a system remote from the DSM Domain Manager, upgrade the MDB using the installation DVD. Select either Install MDB or Install CCS including MDB.
You can also upgrade the MDB and the Manager in a single step using the installer. The installer identifies the MDB system and upgrades the MDB first and then upgrades the Manager. If MDB is installed using Install CCS including MDB option, this feature is not supported.

We have remote mdb so can I just run installer and choose "Install ITCM " instead of "Install MDB"?

     Thanks

Yes the new installer can reach out to the mdb to upgrade it.  On the DM select install Client Automation from the first menu.  It will detect it is an upgrade and do it all for you.  After the upgrade is complete you can run install again  to add any new features or functions you wish to add or change for example Patch Manager.

One caveat, if you have CCS installed and have a remote MDB you still must install MDB and CCS (using the install CCS option) locally on the SQL Server

Does CCS not get upgraded by the "normal " installer? This could be an issue as they don't allow any setups to run directly on SQL server. I can't even copy install files to DB server. They are a Financial Service Provider so very strict rules

I will speak to DBA maybe they can map a drive for me

If CCS is installed and you have a remote MDB, there are components of CCS which must be installed locally. This has historically been a big issue for those clients who want CCS but yet have rules against local installations on the SQL Server, one that still has not been addressed, but will eventually as CCS is phased out. The CCS components on the Domain Manager do indeed get upgraded by the normal install, however the components on the SQL Server require the installer to be run locally on that server to be upgraded.

No because ccs also needs to add things to the OS of the DB server.

But also what are they using CCS for do they still need it?

Yes that is something that should be evaluated pre-upgrade. CCS is no longer required for DTS configuration, but is still required for customers using Event Management (MRAs). If the use case can be handled natively by Client Auto, ditch CCS and simplify your implementation.

Richard that's what I'm thinking now. I think they just installed it (in 2013) for no particular reason. It wasn't a CA Services engagement back then either. I'll investigate tomorrow during the day as the upgrade is only scheduled for 8pm. If they don't need it it will make things much easier

    Thank you

If it was a new install in 2013 I bet they are not using messages and actions.  Generally it is only established customers who used to have UNICENTER would have used messages and actions. As Steve mentioned,  if they are using the 2Dmap for DTS configurations or  event management for calendars those functions are already in Client Auto itself.  The only other feature may be auto discovery but Client auto has a built in function for that using DMsweep.

    HI Werner

Yes you should be able to just do the upgrade from the Domain Manager with the remote SQL instance. We usually advise people to upgrade the mdb first on the remote server by run setup.exe and choose install mdb as it avoids connection issues.  if you do make sure you use the correct SQL port and if applicable the instance name.

Then run setup.exe on the Domain Manager itself and it should locate the mdb.

Please make sure the Windows account you use to do the upgrade is a member of the Local Administrators on the DM and the SQL Server and has the SQL server role of SYSADMIN assigned to it. You should also stop caf prior to the upgrade and make sure there are no active connections to mdb.

Thanks and let us know if you have any followup questions

I just wanted to say thank you to everybody's input. We have successfully upgraded IT Client Automation to 14.0 in both DEV and QA with remote mdb's. I just used the main installer "Install ITCM" and it picked up the mdb settings and upgraded it. Luckily CCS wasn't installed before so that resolved that problem. My common asset viewers in the service desks are working and we are getting assets in from SCCM. The reconciliation to APM also proved better results than before, not sure if this is just as a matter of fact or if it had anything to do with the upgrade.

    Have a good weekend.
