UIM Upgrade 7.5 to 8.4

Is there a migration path when upgrading UIM from version 7.5 to 8.4?

Or does this installation package allow a direct jump to 8.4?

    Hi Deepika,

You'll want to make a stop at 8.2 before jumping up to 8.4.

    7.5 --> 8.2 --> 8.4

This will allow the database and other configurations to be appropriately migrated.

The one thing I stress with any upgrade is to take backups - full backups of the database, and primary/ump \nimsoft\ directories.

With those things, you can roll back as needed if you run into issues during the upgrade.

    Dear deepikasingh

Please have a look at this Knowledge article:

    Knowledge Base Articles

The upgrade path to 8.4 would follow the 8.47 path outlined here, so the recommendation would be 7.5 -> 8.2 ->8.4

A direct upgrade might work, but should be tested extensively, especially when looking at the UMP upgrade (dashboards etc).

    Hi Martin,

    Thanks for the update.

Could you also give an idea about compatibility with RESTFul web service version support?

Also, there would be a point where my primary would be upgraded while my secondary UIM would be at older version 7.5 (or vice- versa)

Can we expect the 2 versions to be having compatible schema, considering that alarms could be generated and may require forwarding from one to another..

    Thanks,

    Deepika

RESTful Web Services - CA Unified Infrastructure Management Probes - CA Technologies Documentation

RESTful web services v2.19 supports UIM 8.31 and earlier. RESTful web services v8.40 requires the wasp version included with UMP 8.4.

What probes are running on your secondary server ? What versions are they on?

If you are upgrading from 7.5 to 8.4 better idea would be to upgrade your secondary too as there might have been many changes since 7.5 to different probes

Again , check what probes you have on secondary and what versions they are on

    Hi Phani.Devulapalli

Thanks, but how do I know which version of RESTful web services is running now.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for the answers.

There is one query aside this, is installation (8.4+ 8.4 SP2) equivalent to installing directly the package of 8.47 available on support site?

    Or should I follow 8.4+ 8.4 SP2?

    So my migration path will be either 7.5 ->8.2-> 8.4->8.4 SP2 OR 7.5 ->8.2->8.47.

You can upgrade to 8.4.7 from 8.2 directly

So, it would be  7.5 ->8.2->8.47

    8.4.7 is higher than 8.4 SP2

    Hi,

The upgrade documentation mentions the order of upgrade as: Primary & then Secondary servers.

Has there been any known impact/issue if the order is reversed, i.e. the secondary servers are upgraded first followed by the primary ones.

    Thanks,

    Deepika

I recommend sticking to the recommended upgrade path.

Upgrading secondary robots and hubs first can lead to some compatibility issues, when the core UIM components on the primary server are not as new as others in the environment.

I couldn't say what the potential for damage is however, as that has not been tested by the Development teams.

    Hope that helps.
