We would like to monitor Omnibus Netcool. There is no out of the box APM agent available. Anyone succesfully monitoring the performance of Omnibus using APM agents?

    Hi Marc:

Since this is more of a how-to/best practice, I am converting to a discussion. Looking in this Community, it appears that some people have done it but not provide details

    https://communities.ca.com/search.jspa?q=netcool%20apm

Will ask internally for a response to be given

    Thanks

    Thanks for your help.

I don’t think it is a best practice, since there is no documentation available, nor any  suggestions from CA to overcome this challenge…

Sorry if I was not clear. Discussions are for Best Practices/Field How TOs/Customization, and Topics rather than questions. (i.e. Non-Support-related issues.)  So other groups as well as customers are welcomed to contribute any assistance

    Thanks

Looks like it was a field pack that we had many years ago.  However not sure if we still have it.  Adding Hiko_Davis Guenter_Grossberger Tim_McGaughey for any additional input on Omnibus Netcool monitoring.

Previous discussions around Netcool have been about getting events into the system, not about monitoring it.  It's possible someone created some monitoring for Omnibus in the past, but I didn't find a field pack for this.

Mdroste, I've never tried to monitor Netcool, but my guess is that it only has a web interface running in one of our monitored languages.  You can use our general Java or .NET agents if it does run one of those languages.  The differences in the named packages (e.g. Tomcat, WebLogic, etc.) are simply a matter of what is enabled and disabled by default.

That is actually not true. The webgui is indeed easily monitored via APM, but the heart from Netcool is Omnibus Netcool

    Marc,

Since we seem to be clear it can be monitored with the existing agents, what is the challenge you mentioned?

We are clear about the webgui, but not about the heart of Netcool, which is Omnibus Netcool. Only indicating there is something wrong with Omnibus via monitoring backend calls from Webgui is not suffient for us, We need to know what the problem is, not only a problem direction.

OK, maybe we were not as clear as I thought then.  APM can monitor the components that are in languages we support.  If Omnibus meets that criteria, you can monitor it.  If not, then you can only monitor the Web UI with the core agent.

It is quite doubtful that Omnibus is a Java or .NET application.  That means you can only monitor non-transactional data around the Omnibus environment, mostly via the EPAgent: log files, performance values you can poll, etc.

Those types of data are similar to the sorts of things you would do with Omnibus itself, which leads to the next item:

I understand that Omnibus has a self-monitoring extension and that ITM also has a probe for Omnibus.  Those are probably the most insight you will be able to get because they are provided by the vendor.

IBM has for sure an agent. The next question is how we are able to retrieve the information from that agent towards our CA APM domain..

It is not clear fro your note if the Omibus NetCool agent "speaks" .Net, Java or something that can be instrumented by APM Can you provide a link with high-level details on API and protocols supported?

    Thanks

    Marc:

Looking at this page, all I see are alerts

    IBM Knowledge Center

I see Java and Javascript mentioned

    As mentioned yesterday

    >It is not clear from your note if the Omibus NetCool agent "speaks" .Net, Java or something that can be instrumented by APM

Not seeing anything with the word netcool agent in these links

    Thanks
