  • 1.  Upgrade to 15.3

    Posted Oct 19, 2017 08:48 PM

    Hello

We have version Clarity version 14.1 running on Windows 2008 Server and SQL Server 2008. (All good).

Now upgrading to version 15.3 on Windows 2016 server and SQL Server 2014.

I have successfully installed Clarity on Windows 15.3 as a new install.

Then configured NSA to the database on SQL Server 2014 imported from Clarity 14.1.

    The problem starts here.

NSA says that the database needs update.

Have got no clue how to update the database?

    Any suggestion please?

    Thanks in advance.

    What does the install.log say?

What does the checkinstall results say?

Sounds like the install script did not perform the db update.

If that is the case, there is no continue or force option and it has to be rolled back from a backup in order to do the install again.

    Hi Mayank,

Importing the pre-upgraded DB on to a upgraded DB does not appear to be the ideal 15.3 upgrade plan. Like mentioned in the previous reply there appears to be a version mismatch. Try querying the cmn_install_history table to find the DB version.

    If

Then configured NSA to the database on SQL Server 2014 imported from Clarity 14.1.

means that you installed 15.3 with the OOTB dwh_mssql_base.db   and mssql_base.db and then switched to the Clarity 14.1.

I don't think that is going to work and not supported any more. The Clarity 14.1 db can only be updgraded if that is the database when you run the the upgrade install script. Importing an older version and the doing the upgrade in NSA/CSA is no longer supported. There is a post where that is stated but I cannot locate it with search.

    Hi Mayank,

I would love to know why did you take the approach of installing App of 15.3 and upgrading database of 14.1. PPM upgrades consist of database upgrade as well as app upgrade.

The approach you took is incorrect and never recommended by CA. So you need to below

    1. Ensure 14.1 is up and running

    2. Have the other components compatibility match as per Release Notes (On Premise) - CA PPM - 15.3 - CA Technologies Documentation

    3. Run the upgrade

    Good luck

    Hi Mayank,

As you are now aware the approach you took is incorrect and never recommended by CA. Refer to this link which gives you Update Examples close to your requirement.

Release 15.3 Updates (On Premise) - CA PPM - 15.3 - CA Technologies Documentation

Upgrade Example 4: You have CA PPM 13.x or 14.2 on SQL Server 2008 or 2012 and want to upgrade to 15.3.
Upgrade Action: Upgrade to CA PPM 14.3, 14.4, 15.1, or 15.2 before attempting to update the SQL Server database. SQL Server 2014 is not supported until 14.3. Upgrade CA PPM to a supported temporary release and then upgrade the database to SQL Server 2014 or 2016 before upgrading to PPM 15.3.

    Thanks everyone for your respnses.

This is not a straight upgrade, because the Windows OS and SQL Server requirements are of higher version in Clarity 15.3.

The infrastructure team is not going to upgrade the VMs, but are taking the old VMs back and giving me new VM of Windows 2016 and SQL Server 2014.

    Cheers !

    Hi Mayank,

Even that the case, you can copy the folder structure from OLD VM and install the third party and ensure PPM 14.1 is up and running and then do the upgrade. However upgrading app and database differently is not a solution.

    I understand now... Thank you.

    One last question.

I have got different VMs now each runs different versions of Clarity, i.e. 13.2 , 14.1 , 14.3 and 15.3.
We know that the intermediate environments are needed solely to process databases, never going to be used by anybody.

Can I use the same VMs to upgrade the databases of higher environments like TEST, Sandpit ?
TEST, Sandpit and PROD will have dedicated installation on VMs only for release 15.3, not intermediate.
Is there any way of upgrading the database through NSA, instead of running install.bat for these environments?

    Thanks
