  • 1.  Weighted Completion Percentage based on size estimate?

Is there a functionality to where the refined estimate for each user story can generate a weighted completion percentage for the parent feature? Currently, each feature has user stories with different preliminary size estimate from XS to XL.  But we would like to input a refined estimate for each story after the start of the iteration which will then be compiled into a weighted in-progress completion percentage for the parent feature.

Currently if five SMALL stories are complete and five LARGE stories are not complete, it will display a 50% in-progress completion percentage for the parent feature, when in reality the real world weighted completion percentage is more like 20%.

Tracking completion percentage by feature is very important for our program management. Any help would be appreciated.

Any ideas on if this is possible?

    Hi Stjepan,

The "% Done by Plan Estimate" field for Portfolio Items should work off of the plan estimates you have entered for the stories. If you click the percent done bar it will popup a window displaying both the Percent done based on the plan estimates, and the percent done based on the number of stories. Both should also display the number accepted vs the number associated.

For example, lets say you have 75 points associated to the feature broken into 10 stories. Five of the stories have an estimate of five, the other five have an estimate of ten. The smaller stories are all accepted, but the larger stories are not. The "% Done by Plan Estimate" field will display a bar indicating 33% done. If you click the bar you will get a breakdown showing that 25 of the 75 points had been accepted, and that 50% of the stories have been accepted.

I was a bit off the mark in my question. We are looking for a weighted Refined Estimate of the Feature based on day 1 vs. each day of the iteration thereafter. There is a big push now for a metric based on the Refined Estimate of all the Features being compiled at the Capability level. We want to know how we're doing each day based on our Refined Estimate rather than just the initial Plan Estimate.

    1. A percent complete of the “Refined Estimate” field of the Feature, which represents the gross Story Point Refined Estimate of the Feature before we have a Story Point tree under that Feature.
    2. The computation is SUM(FeatureRefinedEstimate * FeaturePercentComplete), where the SUM is for all Features under the Capability.

So basically, a percent complete functionality based on the refined estimate as opposed to plan estimate for each feature. Then to compile that to create a refined estimate for the Capability.

One issue I see is that Capabilities currently have their own Refined Estimate user input field. We would need this modified so that this estimate at the Capability level is an automatic calculation of its subordinate Feature Refined Estimates and Feature Percent Complete.
