Reading text from an XML doc (XML_GET_NODE_TEXT)

We have a notification object where we'd like to dynamically populate the contents (e.g., PUT_ATT_APPEND CALL_TEXT) with instructions from the text from an XML document object.

Now I know we have 8000 characters to play with in the notification object, but there's only one function I can use to read the text out of my XML -- XML_GET_NODE_TEXT -- and I'm limited to 1024 characters there because that's the most I can stuff into a script variable.  (And if the text is greater than 1024, that function returns nothing at all, rather than truncating the text at the 1024 mark.)

That said, is there anyway I can read *all* the text out of an XML document, or read the contents 1024 characters at a time?

Or is my only option to break out each XML node into 1024-character (or less) chunks?
