Running workflows with prompts populated from database query

I have a need to run multiple iterations of the same workflow where the prompt values are the results of a database query.  For example, I'll run a database query and get 5 records back with a key value.  I want to start the same workflow 5 times and load the key value into a prompt for that workflow for each iteration (in this example).  I have this working now using one job to create a text file with the list of key values then another job that loops through the records in the text file and runs the workflows.  A co-worker told me how to do this with a database event, but that only seems to process a single record result set.  Is there a more elegant or better way to do this than what I'm doing now - creating a file with the data then looping through the file and activating the workflows?  My way seems a little convoluted and I was curious if there was a cleaner solution in Automic.
