Use of a database trigger to request Automic (AE 10) activity

We have a number of users that have AE handle what I call 'near real time' requests.

Their current approach is to have Events defined where they are evaluated EVERY MINUTE.
Some of the owners have changed to every 10 or 15 minutes, but many are insistent that their process run ASAP after the 'event' (usually something in a database, so lets stay with that).

My thought is to have a DB trigger in their application DB, that would call the AE, using one of the API's, to drive the process.   This would make the launch a 'push' from the source (on demand) rather than having constant polling.

So you understand, we have over 2000 of these events running every minute, and most of those 24x7.  So making this a 'push' would remove a lot of overhead.

Ideas?   Comments?    Gasp, dare I ask, examples?
