Database Maintenance without Archiving

Hi Community!

There are a number of reasons you may not wish to archive data before performing database maintenance. Although many users do keep historical records of the messages window, statistics and reports before DB cleanup, some users may not wish to archive this information on a case by case basis.

For those of you who do not wish to Archive but are still performing database maintenance, it is important to understand the "no_archive_check" option within the configuration files for the Reorg and Unload utilities. Below are links with more details on the ini files for each of these utilities.

If you are not archiving but still wish to perform the reorg and unload, you must change the following value within the reorg and unload ini files to ensure the unload is not checking the archive flag:

no_archive_check=1

By default this value is 0 which ensures the reorg and unload utilities check if database contents have been flagged for archiving before it will perform a reorg or unload on these items. When you change this value to 1, you are telling the database that you do not care about the archive flag.

If you do not change this value to 1, the database will not unload ANY data which has not been archived. So, if you are not archiving, you will never actually clean a significant amount of items from the database.
