How is the "project field" defaulted in a user story/defect/Epic etc?  I tried playing around with the "default project" setting in the user profile. That didn't seem to affect the "project" field in these places.

It is set to the Project that is selected in your Project Picker when the Artifact is created.

The Default Project in your User Profile is the Workspace/Project you will start in when you login to Agile Central.

Hey Michael,

I now understand the part about user profile setting for Default project. 

But I'm not sure about your first line -  "It is set to the Project that is selected..". If I'm a team member of a particular project, then will all my artifacts show that project by default? I should not be choosing this in the "project" field every time I create a story, right?

The Project Picker is how you navigate to various Projects.  It is located in the upper left corner of Agile Central.  There is more information here, Change Project Scoping | CA Agile Central Help .

Whatever you have selected here, in this case "Vivaldi Parent Project" will be the Project in which the Artifact is created.
