In 2017 we discovered that newer Cisco ISR (ex. 4331, 4321, 4431) and ASR (ex. 1006, 1002) are no longer supporting the CISCO-ENVMON-MIB on these devices running IOS-XE. How we discovered the change was we were missing outages for Power Supplies, Fans, and Temperature for some of our managed customers. We contacted Cisco and they verified what we discovered and they informed us they're using the CISCO-ENTITY-MIB for these devices. We configured a few devices to send the Entity traps which is basically a one trap for everything trap that contains very limited information. Because we didn't like the Entity trap format and data we're currently exploring the possibly of enabling syslog traps and only monitoring severity 0-3 syslog events. One problem we noticed with Entity traps is when we receive a standard link down trap we also receive an interface down Entity trap because interfaces are considered entities. Now we get two different interface alarms.
We're curious if the Spectrum module development team is aware of this change Cisco made for these devices. If so, has any research and development been done to better handle the Entity traps and make them more robust, user understandable, and proper event/alarm correlation? We opened case 00749297 last year with support to explore a possible solution for making Entity traps more understandable. Maybe this case will have some helpful information for the development team.
