Export to Excel and Dates

I have a user using the Export to Excel feature from the Ideas Portlet and Project Portlet and it seems to be doing something unusual

So this user has configured thier columns in the Ideas Portlet and also has filtered their view of the list using the OBS Unit and selecting their department no power filters are used. They have brought in a couple of date fields the one I will talk about is a standard Clarity field 'Date Created' When doing the export to excel when it opens in excel the date field is blank. However, when the user does the export to excel against the project list again this column and field of data 'Date Created' is configured in this view, same filter applied the date field will populate when opened in Excel.

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the issue and what the difference might be Ideas vs Projects when doing export to excel?
