Does anyone know what security global group is used to add/remove participants on a project?

Participant rights are not within rights administration.
Welcome to the club.
Collaboration manager can ad and remove the participants and make collaboration (from participants) managers and collaboration managers regular participants.
By default the user who creates a project becomes the collaboration manager and can create more collaboration managers.
There has to be at least one collaboration manager.
You can query the database to find who the manager is if you do no know it.
Then login as that user and create a valid collaboration manager to manage the situation.
There are also db solutions for manipulating participants and collaboration managers - hacks.
The word is that in some case those hacks prevent installation for service packs.
