System Owned Indexes

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Feb 8, 2005
I am putting together a project to rebuild all 100 of the CAS system-owned
indexes and was wondering if anyone knows the answer to this question: is
there any downside to doing the rebuild 'from index' for sets that are
defined as <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns =
""urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"" />OM, OA, or MM. There are no
changes being made - just a rebuild to clean things up. Normally I would do
'from members' for any set that is not MA but that always takes more time.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = ""urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office"" />

Release 16.0 in PRODUCTION
"I would like to find out how many installations are running Release 16.0 in
Production or plan to migrate to Production sometime in the near future.
Also, I would like to know if any installations are using any of the new
TCP/IP API features with the IDMS SQL Option and/or using ODBC/JDBC with
Release 16.0.

Thank you for any information you can provide,

Re: System Owned Indexes
"Craig,

FROM MEMBER should be used when the index structure is corrupted. If
the index is not corrupted, it is more efficient to rebuild from INDEX.

Good luck,
Laura

if they are ""linked"" indexes - you will have to hit the member area anyhow
in order to modify the member record index pointers
only if they are ""unlinked"" (which implies MA) might you gain significant
time and i/o by rebuilding from index

but i could be mistaken

Re: [IDMSVENDOR-L] System Owned Indexes
"From members would imply that IDMS will perform an area sweep to get the required information and the build the index's and then update the up pointers in the member records. So it has to read the member pages twice.

From Index would imply that it just reads the index's and then rebuilds them and then updates the member records up pointer.
This will save 1 I/O per member area page.

In fact looking at the documentation it states

------------------------------------------------------------------------
¦ Function ¦ REBUILD ¦ Subschema specification ¦
¦ ¦ option ¦ ¦
---------------------------------------+-------------------------------¦
Re-organize an existing ¦ FROM INDEX ¦ USING old-subschema-name ¦
¦ index (for example, after ¦ ¦ ¦
¦ deleting many member ¦ ¦ ¦
¦ occurrences) ¦ ¦ ¦
---------------------------------------+-------------------------------

which says to me if you are just 'tidying' an index the you rebuilds from INDEX.
