"I believe it's really a function of the terminal/terminal emulator at
that point.

In ADSO (probably DC-COBOL too), you could program to move the cursor to
the next field of your choice based on the current cursor position. It
would be easy to do if you could choose another key than <TAB>. Using
<TAB> would require changing what <TAB> does on the keyboard since <TAB>
normally doesn't send anything back up the line.
