Re:ADSA/OLH Issue

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Jun 2, 2005
We use ADSA and OLH. One of our programmers needs to use a link instead of
execute next function in one of our dialogs. Since link bypasses ADSA, we
are manually moving the linked to dialog info into the global record. The
problem is that the global record is resetting to the higher level dialog on
every mapin and OLH is displaying help for that dialog instead of the one
linked to. Does anyone know of a way to get around this?

TIA

R16-R15 compatibility
" Hi all,

As most sites do, we implemented Rel 16.0 in our development CVs before
implementing it in Production. We ran into a production problem in R15,
when we happened to migrate a recompiled dialog that did a MOVE 1 to a
COMP field. The recompiled dialog works just fine in R16. If you
recompile the same code under R15, it works just fine. But if you
recompile in R16, and just migrate the load into R15, you run into the
problem, and get message DC175014 at runtime.

Here's the technote that CA sent me, and I thought it would be important
to pass along to everyone.

* ID: 22

* SOLUTION TEXT:

PRODUCT: CA-ADS/ONLINE-MVS/VSE/VM/MSP/BS2000 RELEASE: 16.0

PROB #: 710__ FN: BF24001 FT: AFE DATE: 8 FEB 2005
STARTRAK PRODUCT NAME: ADS370 (OPTIONAL-PROBLEM SUBSYSTEM ASSOCIATION)

***** Product Documentation Change *****

***** Define Optional Apar bit 251 *****

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: DOWNWARD COMPATIBILITY OF RELEASE 16.0 ADS DIALOGS
---------------------------------------------------

Upward compatibility:
CA has always supported upward compatibility of all
components to each new release. It has happened in
prior releases that an upgrade has required the
recompile of programs or the migration of
dictionaries.
Migration to CA-IDMS release 16.0 does not require
that dialogs from prior releases be recompiled.

Downward compatibility:
CA has never officially supported compatibility to
lower-level releases. However, the common practice
of running new releases in development environments
for a period of testing before upgrading production
systems to a new release can be advisable.
This note contains a list of considerations for
running on earlier releases, those ADS dialogs that
were compiled on a release 16.0 cv.

1) Dialogs that were enhanced on release 16.0 to use
features that are new with release 16.0, such as
TCP/IP built-in function 'SOCKET', will not run on
earlier releases.

2) Dialogs compiled on release 16.0 and use no new
features will run correctly on earlier releases
if the migration includes moving the source code
and recompiling the dialogs on the target cv.

3) Dialogs compiled on release 16.0 and use no new
features will NOT run correctly when migrated to
earlier releases if: a) the dialogs use fields
defined as 9(4) COMP, and b) the dialogs are not
recompiled on the target cv.
The abends will include messages such as:
DC175014 UNSUPPORTED DATA CONVERSION
DC175024 INVALID DATA TYPE FOR OPERATON

Optional apar bit 251:
Sites that use new releases on development systems
for a period of testing before upgrading production
systems to the new release, that migrate dialogs
from their release 16.0 development cv to release
15.0 or earlier production, and do not recompile
the migrated dialogs after they have been moved to
the production cv, should
TURN ON OPTIONAL APAR BIT 251
on their release 16.0 systems.
Turning on optional apar bit 251 will ensure that
dialogs that use 9(4) COMP (unsigned halfword)
fields will run when migrated to a pre-release 16.0
cv.
Dialogs that are compiled while optional apar bit
251 is applied will generate pre-release 16.0-
compatible code, and as will any other pre-release
16.0 dialog, they will run on a release 16.0 cv.

Note: Unsigned binary halfword processing was enhanced
for release 16.0 to support numbers ranging up to
64K to support the common practice of defining
TCP/IP port numbers that are larger than 32k.
Prior releases supported halfword fields for values
up to only 32k.
Processing of signed halfword fields, S9(4) COMP,
was not changed for release 16.0.

Note: If the modified dialogs use ASSIGNMENT statements,
COMPUTE, MOVE, etc., that access the higher range
of values, they will abend when run on prior
releases with messages such as:
DC175016 TARGET FIELD TOO SMALL
DC175021 PGM CHECK (DECIMAL OVERFLOW)

Re: IDMS R16 SP2 is now available
"A quick question on upgrading from 16.0 SP1 to SP2. There would be no
need to update the dictionary's because we had done this when going from
15.0 to 16.0? Right?

Thanks
