16.2 Head Banger

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Jul 25, 2005
Hi gang! Geez, I don't write for a year, and now 2 in less than a week.

Installing 16.2, and ran across something that caused me to lose more of
my already thinning hair. ScenariTo: IDMS 14.1 is running fine. Shut
it down normally, and cut over libraries and dictionaries, initialized
journals. Started up 16.2. CV abends on a 3964 on startup with
absolutely no indication as to why in the JES log. Dumped log file.
Nothing there either. This problem did not occur in the previous 4 CV's
I had cut over. Base 16.2 load library is a copy of the one I cloned to
make the base libraries for the other 4 that were already upgraded.

So I swapped in the old libraries, reinitialized journals using the 14.1
base BCF. Started the CV. Came up just fine.

Resolution: STACKSIZE was 945. CA recommends a minimum STACKSIZE of
3000 - and if I had been following their recommendations, I wouldn't be
writing this e-mail to y'all). Regenned the new STACKSIZE (3000),
swapped libraries, initialized journals again, and started up 16.2.
Problem verified resolved.

There were no hits on this in Knowledge Base, and at 04:30, Level-1 is
still asleep.

Moral of the story: 16.2 uses more stack (and a little more STORAGE
POOL 0 too) than 14.1 (don't know about 15.0). So before you upgrade
that CV, check your STACKSIZE. It might save you some grief.

"Greetings again,

To assist those IUA members who are planning to go to CA World and take
advantage of the user group discount, we (the IUA) have been asked to
submit a list of our members who plan to attend. If you are going (or even
thinking about going), please send your name and company to

Rhdcctab
"Is there a rhdcctab decompiler?

I also have a related question and no documentation handy. Dcmt
commands that are not handled in the ctabgen, are these usable by
public, or are these not acessible to anyone? For example, if a dcmt
display memory node is not coded with a corresponding activity class,
does that mean anyone who can invoke the dcmt task can do a dcmt display
memory? Or does it mean that noone can, since no node was coded for
dcmt d me?

IDMSQSAM
"I'm wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in area sweeps by
using the IDMSQSAM option (in the SYSIDMS file). I tried it years ago
with DCB=BUFNO=10, 20, etc. but don't remember any substantial
improvments in processing time (I remember many years before that
jigging the DMCL assigned buffers for local area sweeps and seeing
improvement in pre rels 12 days).

Is this option just smoke and mirrors or are there other parameters I
can apply to improve our area sweeps?

(we're currently on z/OS, rels. 1.something and rels 14.1 of IDMS, not
sure how DASD is set up)

from my memory, i believe QSAM kicks in ONLY for the first file it finds
eligible (you can tell it differently with a SYSIDMS parm) so if the file
you WANTED to be QSAM'd was not the file QSAM picked, adding buffers would
make no difference ...

Hung DCMT VARY AREA Command
"While we are on the subject of hung dcmt vary area command, today I
tested the DCMT VARY ID *** TERMINATE command to terminate the pending
DCMT command

Pending Vary Area operations can be cancelled with the DCMT VARY ID
command in IDMS 16.0. First issue a DCMT DISPLAY ID command to display
outstanding DCMT operations.
Note down the ID of the pending VARY command and issue: DCMT VARY ID
xxxx TERMINATE

I have tested the DCMT VARY ID TERMINATE as follows.

DCMT DIS SEG SYSUSER
