14.1 is dead. Long live 14.1!

And for those of us who haven't upgraded yet, I have a quick survey. By
show of e-mails, how many are still running 14.x and how many are still
running, um, er older versions?

Goodbye Career?
"Hi All,
I know this is a personal subject, so I don't know how many will respond.
How many people are just going to wave goodbye to this field when their
current IDMS job is gone? How many still have the desire (absent of needing
a paycheck) to learn new things and start from the bottom again?
I'm pretty sure that once my last IDMS client is gone, I will be waving
goodbye and I'll find something else to do. That is, unless someone comes
along and says they want me for my IDMS knowledge and experiance. Then I
might consider continuing. But with the lack of respect technicians
receive, the lack of involvement in any decision making, and the general
treatment that a technician is just about the lowest form of life in the
company and could easily be replaced, (along with all the documentation,
approval and paper work now required to do any type of change) I don't see
the reason for starting again at another company.

Re: Goodbye Career?
"I hope that IDMS is not the be-all end-all in my 'career'. Let's put it
this way, I can only do better in something else. I've been working
almost exclusively with DB2 for several years, and there's a lot to sink
your teeth into. It doesn't lack in complexity and I am always
learning. Would I get into another career if IT kicked me into the mud?
Well, I recall a level 2 manager at Cullinet mentioning to another one
that I would be better off as Chef Tell. No doubt he had my heritage in
mind. Maybe I can try that. But then neither one of those two managers
managed to write a single PTF of their own, so I think maybe I can earn
a living for a little while longer in IT. It is a grand old circus.
Loads of fun. And the pay isn't half bad either.

Re: Goodbye Career?
"Hi Joe,
This is a sad email indeed, and a grave reflection of the times. I have saved many of your contributions into folders for future reference if ever I need them, and I am sure you will be greatly missed in the IDMS world.
I am lucky in that I have been introduced to SQLSERVER so that I will still have employment when we finally say good bye to IDMS. I'll never get the same job satisfaction from working with it as I do with IDMS, but at least I'll still be employed, but there you go - life changes. I sincerely hope your world is always a happy one.
Good luck,
Geoff
