Good bye IDMS ???

My employer is trying to convert all self made ADS&IDMS core business
systems to software package running on AIX/Oracle (not the best
combination btw).

Results so far are not exactly encouraging : huge performance problems
with fraction of the final amount of data, 20+ people project with at
least three oracle dba's doing what was done in the mainframe with three
programmers and one dba. Not to speak about the money spent, so far. And
the overdue schedule. And moving target of the project. And....

One conclusion I have made is this : Facts are not the most important
ingredient in decisisions, although they should be.

Re: Goodbye IDMS
" I have been in my current position for almost 10 years. I have had, if I
can recall correctly, six prominent IDMS clients. I only have one left, but
here's what's happened to those six clients in that time:

1. Stayed until end of contract (2000?). As far as I know, they are still
on IDMS 10.2
2. Stayed until end of contract (2000?). Scheduled to be off IDMS by 1998,
but probably still running 10.2
3. Got off the mainframe completely - IDMS stayed until the end
4. Got off the mainframe completely - IDMS stayed until the end
5. Converted from IDMS to DB2. They're having a good time with this one.
6. Have plans to get off IDMS once everything is converted to DB2. I
believe it will be sometime this millenium since they got an early start.

In summary, I can say this. In the almost 10 years my company has been
running IDMS for clients, the performance group has never learned anything
about IDMS - performance has never been an issue. They are very familiar
however, with the workings of DB2.
I wonder why???

Re: Good bye IDMS ???
"Our shop attempted to convert a large IDMS database to AIX/DB2 (also not
the best combination). After much time and expense, similar to Timo's
description below, the project been put ""on hold"" for the next three
years. If you are scratching your heads about the three year delay for
officially killing the project, that is when we will get a new governor.
Isn't politics fun?
