Re: [IDMSVENDOR-L] OM INDEX

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Dec 28, 2005
is this a system-owned index or user record-owned index?

Re: OM INDEX
"Kay,

The last three would need to ready the area for update or at least need
changes to the program.

1. Modify records, but do not connect them to the index.
A. If you modify a sort-key from the new set you need to ready the area for
update.

2. Erase records that are not already connected to the index.
A. The question is ""how would you know?"" I would say always ready for
update for programs that erase.
To test you would need to update the program anyway, so it should be no
big deal to ready the area.

3. Erase r Owner Records with ALL option (I.e. Erase IBASETR ALL MEMBERS,
where the member record is the one with the new Index).
A. Ready for update.

I have been asked to pass on the following question:

Subject: OM INDEX

Kay,

Would you be kind of enough to present this note to the IDMS Listserv
group?

When adding an OM Index to an existing record and realize some programs
that access the Record the Index is being added to will have to be
changed to READY the new Index Area.

We are certain programs that are to do the following need to READY the
new Index Area:

CONNECT or DISCONNECT Records to the new Index

Access Record using the New Index

Any others???

But what about other programs. Do these programs need to READY the new
Index Area?

Simply access the records with the new index by other means than the new
index

STORE Records, but do not connect them to the index

Modify records, but do not connect them to the index

Erase records that are not already connected to the index

Erase r Owner Records with ALL option (I.e. Erase IBASETR ALL MEMBERS,
where the member record is the one with the new Index).

Re: OM INDEX
"Kay,
I would add the programs with ""ERASE owner ALL"" since the record in question is a member and some occurrences are likely to belong to the index at some point.

Kay,
My guess would be exactly as described by the designer. The only
exception I can see is if the index is sorted, the record belongs to the
index and you modify the sort key within the record. In this instance, IDMS
would need to access the index. Other than that, as long as you don't
access via the index or CONNECT/DISCONNECT, I don't think you need to READY
the area.
