Re:Maximum Page Size for IDMS Database Files

Discussion created by ca.portal.admin on Jul 18, 2006
Hi,

=20

We look as though we will be running on new disks in the future that
would be formatted as 'MOD 9' rather than our current '3390' style.
This
would allow us to increase our page sizes for the IDMS files. We are
running 16.0 SP1 and the manual suggests that 32764 is the maximum
allowed by IDMS. Is this true or could we go bigger if warranted?

Thanks

Re: Maximum Page Size for IDMS Database Files
"Chris,

The DASD vendors are pretty much sticking with the 3390 as a base at this
point, so the track size did not change with the mod 9, just the number of
cylinders. The mod 9 is a triple, triple density or nine times the capacity
of a standard 3390. Off the top of my head a single had just over 800
cylinders, so a mod 9 is nine times that. I believe the max page size is an
MVS limitation that hasn't changed in eons. You just can't allocate a block
larger than that.

Maybe I should have asked this question.

What is the maximum track size on a Mod 9?

We have been using 3390 for a long time and plenty on IDMS releases? If
Mod 9 is not bigger than 56664 then the 3390 sizes still stand up. If it
is then has IDMS changed its maximum from 32764?

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Maximum Page Size for IDMS Database Files
"Good point. I was testing to see what the actual number was using flat
files in ISPF. I have not allocated any buffers or pages to use 27998.
Regardless, the maximum capacity of the track is 55996 (finger problem
on previous email) until the max record size is increased beyond 32767.
I haven't heard anything different yet, so I assume that this is still
the max rec size.
